Hi, all,

I have been running a PVR box for about a year using XP MCE 2005 because it's easy to set up, but my OTA reception (ATSC) is not ideal for watching the local networks in HD. Forunately, I receive all of the local networks in HD over CATV QAM, so I would like to take advantage of the HVR-1600's QAM tuner to record HD in GBPVR.

Cable background: I have Comcast in Northern Virginia and receive the following channels plus others:
0 - multiple digital cable non-HD stations in the clear
1.4 - Fox
1.6 - PBS
1.10 - NBC
1.11 - ABC
109.5 - CBS

After some tinkering in the config and reinstalling of the Hauppauge software/drivers/codecs, I now am able to see myriad digital channels (mostly UNKNOWN / unusable) when I perform the digital channel mapping w/ autoscan. I am able to locate the ABC, CBS, and PBS HD stations and map them to their analog station numbers, but I'm not able to find the NBC and Fox stations in HD, just their non-HD counterparts (which show up on other channel numbers over QAM). Does anyone have any recommendations for picking up these stations? It is the last step in my GBPVR configuration.

Other config info: I have both the analog and digital sides of the HVR-1600 set up as device #1. The HVR-1600 is using system default for all of its settings.

System Config
GBPVR: Ver 1.3.11
OS: Windows XP MCE 2005
Software: Hauppauge CD ver. 4.6
CPU: Athlon XP 2000+
Mobo: Asus A7V400
RAM: 512 MB PC-2100 -- works well enough w/o anymore
Video: ATI Radeon 9600 XT
Sound: On-board sound

Sincere thanks

Zip and post your config.*.log files after running a scan. Make sure to include the -native file.

I have attached the following files from the gbpvr\logs directory in a zip file:

02/08/2009 02:04 PM 43,382 config.exe-1.log
02/08/2009 12:35 PM 53,598 config.exe-2.log
02/08/2009 12:30 PM 40,926 config.exe-3.log
02/08/2009 02:02 PM 548,948 config.exe-native-1.log
02/08/2009 12:33 PM 925 config.exe-native-2.log
02/08/2009 12:30 PM 925 config.exe-native-3.log
02/08/2009 02:39 PM 925 config.exe-native.log
02/08/2009 02:57 PM 40,047 config.exe.log
8 File(s) 729,676 bytes

Thanks a ton for taking the time to look at them.

I just installed the latest patches to see if that would fix my issue -- I saw a lot of posts regarding channels being missed on scan. Now when I try to rescan (Config > Capture Devices > HVR-1600 QAM > Mapping Channels), the Config utility crashes during initialization.

The patches I installed (by overwriting the files in the gbpvr\ directory):
- 1.3.11 Surival Guide Sticky #4: Various issues with multi-record enabled
- 1.3.11 Surival Guide Sticky #5: ArcSoft Video Decoder not working
- 1.3.11 Surival Guide Sticky #7: Problems with channels missing from scan results, or zero byte recordings from certain channels

I have since rebooted the comp and re-registered the filters. Do I need to remove and re-add devices? I hesitate to do that, since I spent a lot of time mapping the digital channels I've been able to find so far.

I've attached the latest logs. Help is much appreciated.

Hi,

I'm still having issues with QAM on my card, seemingly more than when I first posted. I have attached the most recent scan logs. Does anyone have any advice on picking up channels that I can receive on my TV but not on scan? As I mentioned previously, I live in Northern Virginia (DC metro area) of the U.S. and have Comcast cable.

According to Silicon Dust HDHomeRun, I should be able to access the following channels (type = qam256; format = channel.program):
86.6 PBS HD - ok (TV tunes as 1.6)
86.13 local HD - ok (TV tunes as 1.13)
86.14 local HD - ok (TV tunes as 1.14)
108.4 NBC HD (TV tunes as 1.10)
108.10 FOX HD (TV tunes as 1.4)
109.11 ABC HD (TV tunes as 1.11)
109.12 CBS HD (TV tunes as 109.5)

I am only receiving 3 of the above ok. I also am picking up a lot of digital channels in the 112.* range as well as in the sub-100 range. I *had* been able to map the ABC and CBS channels (I think I have a successful scan of them on the config.exe-native-1.log in the zip file a couple posts up), but I can't get them anymore.

If you don't feel like scrounging through the logs, here is an excerpt for channels 108 and 109, and then from channel 86 (config.exe-native.log). Nothing pops out fault-wise; there doesn't appear to be any data there.

Thanks,
H

It's failing to find a valid digital signal at that frequency. Does the WinTV software find those channels?

whurlston, thanks a ton for taking a look!

I used to be able to tune them. I uninstalled the WinTV software (but not the TV services) to see if it was playing havoc. I'll reinstall and double-check when my wife is done watching TV.

Are there any other files that I should post? Like bda.ini? Or should I provide timestamps from any of my Hauppauge drivers?

As an aside, here is an excerpt from config.exe-native-1.log from the first ZIP above. I was able to tune channel 109 without any issues. I'm pretty sure the cable company hasn't done anything different in a week, but it's entirely possible (and probable) that I botched the configuration myself.

It's possible that your cable company has moved channels. It's been known to happen. Your bda.ini is fine or the tuner would not work at all. I've already double checked the frequencies being tuned so I know that your qam.ini is fine as well.

I'll try to take another look at the logs later. I've been taking sinus medicine today so I haven't been able to see things as clearly as I should.

No problem; thanks for confirming that I'm not botching things too badly. 'Hope you feel better.

2009-03-03, 02:00 AM (This post was last modified: 2009-03-03, 02:00 AM by Hoogineer.)
I've managed to get things running pretty stable. I have given up on QAM -- maybe it's my cable provider, maybe it's the card, maybe GBPVR is missing channels in the scan -- after all, the cable provider can organize channels however it sees fit.

Most recently I noticed that I could use mc2xml to use 2 dat files (cable and antenna) and combine them into a single xmltv.xml file for use with GBPVR. (Initially I overwrote the analog stations with the HD stations; then I added channels at the end, but I couldn't copy over / populate the EPG data.)

I have NTSC and ATSC working pretty well in tandem. I still have some small configuration items to work out:
- enable recording the same program on both tuners (in case ATSC isn't tuning)
- reinstalling the Community skin (properly) so that I can custom-configure it
- getting an EPG enhancer to work properly -- Does mc2xml get enough data to support one of these? The UltraEPG Enhancer?

It's a lot easier getting ATSC to work than QAM...
