Different versions between client and server?

Can the server be 1.2.x and the client be 1.3.x? Will that make things worse? I'm having some crazy crashing and thought I would just upgrade the client first but I'm afraid it won't work. Does the version mismatch cause any problems?

You should try to stick to the same version on both client and server. You might get lucky on some versions, but its not tested or recommended, and might break on the next version.

fwiw I did have a 1.2.13 client accessing a 1.3.11 server with no observed trouble. But as sub says....
