I can control the menu in gbpvr with hip but when I go into live tv the up button on the remote which is the up key on the keyboard, can't change the channel or anything else. I have to use the keyboard instead and when I go back to the main menu I still can't control anything. So I have to restart gbpvr again to get it functioning.

I'm also noticing slow channel changing as well, about 3 seconds. Is that normal?

Are you watching using Live Preview mode or timeshift mode? The latter will be much slower at changing channels as the recording has to be stopped and started each time.

Check your settings on the first misc tab of the config app.

The speed is also determined by the tuner hardware and/or drivers. I have two cards - a Hauppauge nova-t that is very fast at changing channels, and a Pinnacle 7010ix that is significantly slower.

Regarding hip, it sounds like focus might be lost when video starts playing. Try pressing whatever key you've assigned for hip's popup interface and see what it thinks is the active program.

What make of remote are you using?

I have a Hauppage 2250 dual tuner card and the remote it came with in the MCE kit. I'm using the 2250 card to watch and record ATSC. I have windows xp home installed and am using a mce driver I found online to manipulate the remote with hip. I have latest beta drivers installed on the card. I can run wintv with the remote buttons working but not gbpvr. I have "use live preview mode if possible" selected and "return from timeshift mode on channel change" selected too. I also have no deinterlacing selected. When I exit gbpvr pop up box for hip indicates that it's focused on gbpvr since it's bold.

I tried unselecting the boxes to see if it helped but didn't.

Post the logs and I'll see if I can see any reason for a slow channel change. With live preview enabled, it'd normally only take about second to change channels.

The logs I was interested in were pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log. You'll need to post them immediately after you view live tv and try changing channels.
