I'm running 1.3.11 in a client - server setup. The server is XP Pro SP3 and the client is Vista Ultimate x64. Network is wired from server to AP and wireless G from AP to client.

Everything has been working great until yesterday. Suddenly, if I go to TV Guide on the client and schedule a quick record, PVR freezes after the quick record screen drops to the background at maybe 5% transparency. While the client is frozen, I can go to the server and see that the recording was successfully scheduled. Eventually the client un-freezes but when it refreshes the TV Guide screen, the recording is not highlighted. If I then back out to the main menu and then go back to TV Guide, the recording is highlighted.

The server works 100% including scheduling quick recordings. This seems to be a client or network issue.

The only thing that has changed is that yesterday I installed TiVo desktop 2.7 on the client and server. However, I have uninstalled it on both machines, re-booted them and even unplugged the TiVo wireless USB adapter (just in case) and the problem remains.

There are no other issues with either PC and the TiVo desktop worked great.

Anyone have any ideas here?

Quick update..... after looking in the logs, it looks to me like the client is waiting for the server and this produces an error. I uninstalled GBPVR on the server and re-installed but this didn't help. I am now doing a restore from an Acronis backup from about a month ago. Let's see if this helps. At least it will totally undo anything TiVo desktop did..... It will also revert IE 8 back to IE7 but I don't think this is the problem?

I have already done a system restore on the client to roll back to before TiVo desktop was installed and it didn't help.

I FOUND IT! Turns out that when I installed TiVo desktop, I uninstalled Kerio firewall and turned the Windows firewall on. The Windows firewall was blocking something without telling me it was blocking. Turning it on and off makes the problem come and go.

Now to find out what exception it needs. Or leave it off (I am behind a router). Or go back to Kerio, which was bugging me any time the client IP changed. Has anyone gotten client/server working with the Windows firewall on XP?
I have added GPVR to the exceptions list but it is still blocking whatever it needs when the client schedules a recording (everything else works fine).

Too bad I figured it out after I did the Acronis restore because that wiped my recording database as well as any individual recordings I had scheduled. But I can recover from that.

For now, I have turned off Windows firewall and re-installed Kerio.

Oh and FWIW, TiVo desktop works great. I can point it at my GBPVR capture folder and can watch TiVo recordings on the PVR or PVR recordings on the TiVo. I am using the free version, which is limited to MPEGs but the paid version will transcode other formats on the fly and transfer them to the TiVo.

Over 802.11g, the transfer is about 20% faster than real time, so you can start watching as soon as you start the transfer. Basically the same functionality as MVP but comes for free if you have the TiVo already.
