I wonder if someone in the know could help me

* I have a Sony KD-28DX40 windscreen TV
* It's resolution is standard UK pal, which I think is 720x576, which is not widescreen?
* The PC is connected to the TV using s-video and a ATI HD4350
* My source is UK Freeview DVB-T which is 720x576.

So as far as I can see it's a widescreen TV tube with a 4x3 resultion..?

Questions
* What TV shape do I set in GB-PVR?
* What desktop resolution should I use?

You know I was looking up the same stuff about wide screen and 720x576 recently. It seems that wide screen is 720x576 but the pixels are stretched. Different ratio to 4:3. I was looking this up to understand how to record 16:9 and 4:3 and it seems the "resolution" is the same. You need to tell the tv you've hooked up a widescreen stream or tell the stream to tell the tv it is a 16:9 picture and the TV stretches it out.

correct. the answer is that the pixels are not square but rectangular.

I ran my card at 720x576 for a couple of years but with my recent ATI 4670 card, I now run at 1024x576 as at 720x576 I get really bad tearing. Also I think 1024x576 is slightly sharper as the card is effectively upscaling the image slightly.

so set to 16:9 in gbpvr and use either 720x576 or try 1024 x 576

So it's more like widepixels then widescreen Big Grin

Hmm, I think I might try 1024x576 as I have been experiencing playback issues. Thanks.

That screen has widescreen dimensions which means that the broadcasts will be shown full screen. If it was not widescreen a lot of digital content would be shown letterboxed or the dimensions are off. I've seen some beautiful 720x576 15Mb DVB samples that rival HD in quaility.

Note with analog capture you don't get widescreen unless you run utilities to convert it.

How do you mean? I record 720x576 and say its a 16:9 stream. Then when I play it back it's widescreen unless I override.

recordings received on an analogue tuner such as the pvr-350 are not transmitted in 16:9 ratio AFAIK.

Perhaps your tv is stretching the picture to fit the screen?

sorry - I lied. It is set at 1024x768. I broke my long held rule of maintaining the vertical res at 576. However at the lower res, I can't access the avivo video settings such as edge enhancement. looks fantastic to me on my 100hz pany crt.

You definitely want to set the TV Shape setting strictly according to the physical shape of the screen. It has nothing at all to do with the resolution.

I did wonder, as I don't have the option of 1024x576 in the settings.

More info on this? Link? Also, does AVIVO appear as a codec in the list or is it a post-processing thing?
