I see that my SD QAM recodings are mostly being transmitted in 704x480p resolutions, When watching through GBPVR on my 42 inch HDTV, it has black borders all around it, it looks like it is being displayed at 16 x 9 but at a smallers resolution so it ends up looking like a 37inch picture on 42 inch screen with black boarders.

Is there a way to zoom the picture so the black boarders dissapear.

Is your 42 inch HDTV widescreen, and do you have the monitor shape set to 16:9?

I'm only aware of this "black bars on all four sides" problem when users are receiving 16:9 broadcasts which contain a 4:3 picture with black bars added prior to broadcast, then they try to view them on a 4:3 screen (since it needs to add black bars top and bottom to show a 16:9 picture at the correct aspect ratio).

I have the same thing, I'm pretty sure. TV is 16x9, Cable company is broadcasting 4x3 content (so the TV creates vertical bars), and the TV channel is broadcasting it's 16:9 content as letterbox inside the 4x3 (which includes the horizontal bars.)

My TV has a Zoom feature that can take out the horizontal and vertical bars. Or I can 'f7' the aspect ratio to switch to "Remove Letterbox".

Personally, I didn't like the actual values for that profile, but it was easy enough to tweak them a little...

I use these two pages on the wiki to get a handle on tweaking the aspect ratio settings.

I get the same thing a lot of times. I asked in another post about using GBPVR with no aspect ratio correction because I wanted to use FFDshow for the correction, but it seems to fight with GBPVR's correction. ZEHD, how long did it take you to figure out this thing? At a glance it seems complacated! Also, how do you handle going from true 4:3 to all bars? I only get it on some channels. (Like when History International shows a 16:9 show that was recorded in high def, HI is SD only.)

I can't take all the credit. I basically took what I found on the forum and threw it into the web pages. Oh yeah the math looks wild. I was planning on making a GUI to help with that stuff, but I got side tracked...

Anyway, I know that all of us have different ways of describing what we're seeing.

My cable company broadcasts its analog in 4x3. That means the the outside dimensions whether it's picture or just black is 4x3. Many channels like Discovery and History are completely 16:9 (or try to be at least) and so they send wide screen content to the cable company. The cable company adds black bars to top and bottom so that the 16:9 show is letterboxed.

When you play back that picture, you TV should see that it's a 4x3 picture and center the box inside it's frame, adding black bars. That image, has horizontal bars too, and so, you think that there are bars all the way around...

In any case, some TVs can't do what I'm suggesting: Some TVs have a 4x3, 16x9 aspect only. Some other ones have a Zoom, or Custom aspect ratio too, so on my TV, I select Zoom1, and that effectively removes the horizontal and the vertical bars, and I have a 16:9 picture (a little blurrier, because it's only analog picture that's been blown up)

OR:

In some cases, and I think it has to do with the VMR, EVR, etc settings, you can change the aspect ratio from GB-PVR using the F7 key.

I have a wireless keyboard near my PC client. After I know its working, I 'map' the F7 to a key on my remote. And now I can switch aspects while chilling on the couch...

By the way, the "Remove Letterbox" setting is default with GB-PVR. You only need to tweak config.xml settings if you aren't completely happy. But really you'd only be tweaking a scan line or two...

Mmmm, I think I tried that, but it only removed the bars from the sides, as I remember. I'll try it, though. I'll let you know how it goes later. The best would be to use autocrop in FFDshow, though. If it works like the autocrop in MEgui, it would be awsome!!

I'm pretty sure you have the same problem I had: cable company broadcasting an "HD" formatted program, in analog, so you basically end up with a picture frame of black borders. Try this (scroll down a bit for the solution I figured out, if so):

thanks

I did some testing and its seems that rendering in EVR is causing an issue, i added your settings and it would not show up while using EVR, i switched to VRM9 and it was there, but at the same time the remove letterbox setting fixed the problem too, so while using EVR it wont work for me anyway as i cant seem to get it to show up and remove letterbox setting does not remove the above and below letterbox it just stretchs it out in EVR

Thanks
