Hi Guys,

I've out grown the four ports on my linksys router. A while back I bought a Linksys switch and it worked fine for a little bit and quit. I got it replaced and it quit after a little bit again. GRRRR! Ok, I got a cheapie Trendnet that was well reviewed on NewEgg. It's worked well for four months or so, but now it's becoming flaky. Basically it just slows way down. I have an Xbox, Popcornhour, and a PC on it and they all slow down. No errrors are given, transfers between them are just dog slow. If I unplug the switch and plug it back in the wahlah, it works for a while and then things get slow again.

Now I'm annoyed, is there a decent quality reasonably priced switch out there?

The commercial duty 3com SuperStacks are on fleaBay cheap, are they worth looking at?

As always, thanks - I really appreciate all the help and advice given here!

I've had a D-Link DES-1024 (10/100 Mbps, 24-ports) running here for about 2 years without ever a hiccup. I do keep it plugged into a small UPS so that it doesn't get whacked by power problems, but who knows if that made a difference or not. We have 6 PC's (including the GBPVR server), 3 MVP's and a PS3 connected to it. I bought it from http://www.zipzoomfly.com and found a $20 rebate for it, so it ended up costing about $50. Someday the price of Gigabit switches will come down to the point that I can afford a 24-port one. Rolleyes

The only problem I've had with a switch over the years was after a very close lightning strike. The problem with commercial switches is their noise. I picked up an Intel 480t from ebay and it works great and has wonderful management, redundant PSU but four fans !

Another vote for NetGear - I've had a few D-Link switches over the years but their power supplies haven't been very reliable - I've gone through quite a few - and they seem to be quite temperature-sensitive, prone to overheating.

Thanks guys!

I found a D-Link DES-1024 on fleaBay cheap enough so I'm giving one of them a shot.

My advice would be not to stack it on any other heat-producing device - it won't like it...

I wont. I have the current switch mounted to the back of the computer desk so it's got plenty of cool air around it.

Got an 8-port HP Procurve 1400-8G gigabit switch. It's $70 but has lifetime warranty and next business day advance replacement, not that I've ever needed to use it.
