Glitches in analogue or DVB ?

I am in the process of buying the parts so that I can put together a PVR and so I would like to ask you folks a quick question.

I am trying to decide which TV tuner card to go for. The truth is I cant decide on whether to go for an analogue card or jump right in with a DVB card.  DVB does seem to be the logical choice since in theory the picture quality should be better, I get a wider selection of channels and the sound should be in stereo.

I do have one small doubt though, and its here that I hope somebody here will be able to reassure me. Even though I live in an area with very good signal strength, I occasionally get the odd picture glitch on my old  Nokia freeview settop box. I presume that this is probably caused by nearby electrical equipment.  I'm not really that worried about the odd glitch, but it has made me think. if I get a glitch when using a DVB tuner card, then the mpeg file saved from it will contain corruptions. could this result in a video stream that could be out of sync (with the audio), or even worse, unplayable from that point on ?  or in a form so that I cant edit it and burn it to DVD.

However, I imagine that if I'm recording with an analogue TV card then the mpeg will still encoded correctly, but just with the slight picture glitch encoded into it.

so, have any of you folks out there encountered many problems with corrupted mpeg files, or am I just worrying about a non-issue ?

Yes, I get corrupted mpegs when I get a glitch. Its a problem when I try to edit the files, ie remove adverts & trim the start, but I usually manage to sort it out [Image: smile.gif]

I'm currently using ordinary cheap white & brown coax which is probably picking up electrical interference, I'm going to replace this over the next week with satellite quality coax (C100?) & see if it improves things.

I also have a PVR350 which is now reduntant, the Nova-T recordings are far better quality & mostly in widescreen.

I recommend the DVB card over the PVR providing you make sure you have good coax & the correct aerial

Thanks for that Clanky. Out of interest, you say that you 'usually manage to sort out' a corrupted file, how do you manage that ?

also has noone else experienced corrupted mpegs when recording DVB ?

I use Womble Mpeg-vcr, http://www.womble.com/vcr-text.htm
and http://www.boilsoft.com/avi-mpeg-rm-joiner.html

The mpeg with glitches is ok until you try & edit it. You can sometimes be successful or the audio will go out of sync.

I recorded ER last night for my missus & when I tried cleaning it up I had sync problems. I managed to sort it by splitting the file, editing each half & then rejoining.

I've heard that VideoRedo is quite good for corrupt files - http://www.drdsystems.com/VideoReDo

To fix corrupt DVB MPEG2 files I use PVASTRUMENTO.
Also see DOOM9 for guide(s) on how to use it, etc.

It's quite quick and then makes them standard mpeg files that any editor or burner (e.g. TMPGenc DVD Author) can use.
