I've been getting rather frustrated with not being able to get 5.1 output from any HD TV broadcasts.

Is anyone managing to do this? If so, what decoder are you using?

I have tried LAV as suggested in various threads, but no joy.

On the whole, they don't broadcast full 5.1 DD (on freesat) very often, although movies on channel 4 often are. Most stuff just tends to be 2.0 DD.

Note that on freeview it's HE-AAC instead of Dolby Digital so that needs taken into consideration with your codec choices too.

If you are trying on Freeview, the only place you may get 5.1 is channel 4 - ITV don't do surround and the BBC have been having problems which has mean they are mostly using 2.0 until someone can look at it!

To get the 5.1 to your speakers may take some jiggling - The LAV decoder is the only decent HE-AAC one.
If you have 5.1 speakers connected direct to the computer your good to go.

HDMI can do 5.1 pcm Audio but a lot of TV's only accept a stereo input, you may have to have an AV amp with HDMI input.

If like me you are using TOST link (Optical or Coax) you will need to re-encode back to 5.1 to suit your Amp input - I use the Motherboard Realtek DTS encoder to send 5.1DTS to the Amp. Some have Dolby 5.1 otherwise Reclock has a software Dolby encoder (See Iain's Reclock-or-not plugin to use with NPVR)
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh
