I am helping a friend with the following setup:

1. HDHomeRun Prime with CableCARD
2. Win 7 with NextPVR

The problem we are having is if we record say 3 shows on 1 channel then want to record a show on another channel at the same time, NextPVR will switch between all 3 tuners padding, which means I can only record typically 2 channels at once.

Is there any way to have NextPVR realize if a channel is already loaded on a tuner to not touch the other tuners for the exact same channel?

Also is it possible to like when the HDHomeRun is in ClearQAM you can view multiple subchannels as long as they are all on the same physical channel, to do the same when it has a CableCARD inserted?

Many times we will record two channels on channel 82 and yet it will use two seperate tuners.

It can't do multi-record from an 'HDHR' source, which is the key reason it's choosing a different tuner for each recording, to try to get padding on each.

It'll only do multi-record on regular digital tuners. ie DVB-C/DVB-T/DVB-S/ATSC/QAM

Is that an "issue" with NextPVR only or any software in general? I know for example Argus TV was able to take the same HDHomeRun Prime without a CableCARD was able to record with a single tuner (with padding), any number of subchannels you want on there at the same time.

You can do that in NextPVR too, using the QAM and ATSC device types.

When you start talking about CableCard though, you don't get the stream with multiple sub channels from the device. You only get the single channel.

Alright, that's what I figured, possibly could be occurring. I have a feeling it's probably due to the virtual channel mapping. I mean how the tuner says give me "truTV" vs give me 91.8 or whatever.

Is there anyway to get another HDHomeRun Prime or similar unit and "link" it, in a way that NextPVR can use it, without paying for another CableCARD?

To make use of a HDHomeRun Prime, you really need a CableCard installed in it. Otherwise you might as well have just got a cheaper QAM/ATSC tuner.

There was talk of a 6-tuner Prime at some stage, but I don't think it ever happened.

It's coming http://www.hdhomerun.com/products/models/hdhr3-6cc-3x2/ but requires 2 CC's. Ceton makes a 6 tuner that uses 1 CC.

Would it be possible for nextpvr to do one of these in a future version:
Show A records from 19:00-20:00
Show B records from 20:00-21:00
Both have padding of pre 1, post 2
1) Record Show A until 20:02, then copy 19:59-20:02 to show b.ts, continue recording on show b.ts without interruption.
2) Record a ts from 18:59-21:02, then copy 19:59-21:02 to Show B.ts

My understanding is that NextPVR will record both shows but ignore the padding. the recording of show A will end at 20.00 and the recording of show B will start at 20.00.

As more and more of the cable companies here in the US eliminate clear QAM, it would be really great if sub could come up with a method to get padding on consecutive shows on the same channel with Cablecard recordings.

That's correct Graham. The problem is that 'break' is often at a bad time and makes one or both recordings incomplete. Very few shows start exactly on time these days some go over a minute or two without reflecting it in epg. I sync my time every day within 3 hours of recording and it's rarely more than 1 seconds out of sync, occasionally 2 seconds, so that's not the problem.
