I have been using a old MVP for ages and figure its time to upgrade and do away with the MVP. I don't understand how the nextpvr works or what way would be the best to use, do I buy a popcorn hr and use that for my remote control or do I use just the computer with the nextpvr software . I also want to add another tuner to be able to record 4 TV shows at 1 time and I am not sure what way to go on that, would a usb tuner work ok or should I just buy a internal card . Thx for the help with this its been so long since I had to do anything to my system I have lost 95 % of my knowledge on this matter

There are now lots of options. Many are going with XBMC ... http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Devices

using http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Client.XBMC

or http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...d-me-first

I use PCI devices, PCI-E devices and USB devices and I have never noticed that the interface makes any difference.

Another option, if you've got a recent LG or Samsung TV, or a Samsung Blu-Ray player, is using fred's client from here: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post477771

Unlike XBMC, this will give you the normal NextPVR UI, which might be your preference.

The NextPVR interface is certainly available on XBMC with X-NEWA and it works very well even with many plugins.

Yep, true, you could also get it in XBMC going via Martin's X-NEWA.

Ok I read everything that you suggested and so let me see if I have this rite, thenextpvr is the software that controls the computer for rec. ect and so does xbmc which is an addon to allow different devices to view all your recordings . So all i need is some device to access the computer to control and view everything I have recorded to take the place of my current MVP, that's where I am lost! what would take the place of the MPV Sorry if this is such a dumb question but for the life of me I cant wrap my brain around this must be old age setting in. thx again

What did you have before?

Think about it that way?

Did your MVP actually do anything other than provide a 'front-end' to your set-up? Otherwise known as a 'client'.

So you run one or more MVP's, these are/were your 'Client's'

What anyone including yourself has not mentioned here is what was your 'back-end'? Otherwise known as 'Server'.

I am presuming that it was GB-PVR?

What you seem to be looking for is something to replace your old and outdated Server and Client set-up?

What's your other tech? If you are capturing SD with PVR 150 or similar card and not planning to use HDMI the MVP may be just about as good as any other choice. If you are also upgrading to digital HD, well that's a different story.

Duh on my part ! What I currently have is a dedicated windows 7 computer with a hauppauge 2250 running GB PVR software to a MVP to a Sony 36 wega , I don't record any premium movie channels from cable. I want to be able to record 4 ch at one time so I figured I would add another card to my system , I am going to get my hands back in this I might as well up grade to the Next pvr software which is not compatible with the MVP so that needs to be upgraded also,I have been looking at the raspberry pi for this . I had not thought of going HD on all of this but that sure makes sense since I will be upgrading the system! Thx again for all your time and help on this

Anything that can run xbmc can generally be used as an effective client, and with XNEWA the interface is there, too....but in my experience some of the inexpensive android tv boxes and sticks don't do a great job handling the needed plugin scripts, and often don't play the ts streams all that well. Under linux, and with more capable (expensive) machines, things improve.

I just built a little Gigabyte "Brix" system that runs an intel 2807 Celeron. With 4GB ram and a discount ssd I have around $200 in it, minus the Windows license. It's tiny, fanless, and plenty capable for either npvr client/server, and/or xbmc. All my content is HD from HDHomeRun devices.
