Have you tried kodi and xnewa
Biggest let down with android is the hardware decoding is hit and miss
I have had best luck with raspberry pi for cheapest client but it depends in what you are trying to acheive, plus you are in america mpeg hd is really hard on newer cheaper devices for playback.Basically america needs to catch up

Or you could check out the plex channel I have for nextpvr which will transcode live tv to the plex client.

Failing that if you have a HDHomeRun there are apps for getting the stream direct on your device.

The question is a little like "how long is a piece of string?". Yes it's possible but there are a lot of variables - the version of Android, device hardware, player app capabilities, stream payload (codecs, bitrates, etc etc).

I had a quick look at this and gave up pretty fast - In the end I have Handbrake transcoding recordings to a format my Wife's waterproop Xperia X2 can play easily so we can catch up on telly in the Spa. I found AirPlayIt which does on the fly transcoding and streaming - It works on my ipad and they now have Android support but when I looked at it it wasn't available for the Xperia X2 - It seems they've limited it to specific hardware (I hate android fragmentation!). None of this answers the question on Live TV though - I think this would be a pipe dream without direct development by Sub as trying to transcode and stream a recording WHILE its being written to would be pretty tricky for a seperate piece of software I'd imagine.

A full NextPVR client for IOS and Android would be KILLER - especially for the chunk of the world broadcasting in H264 which these devices like but I suspect the Audio codecs would kill it without on the fly transcoding so all becomes a little tricky.

I had it (Android dual core TV stick embedded in a Motorola Bionic lapdock) working with MediPortal and their Android app but MediaPortal's tuner scan routine is about as old as MediaPortal itself and it doesn't do a rescan right so I have to go through 99 Clear Qam cable channels (Of which I use about 70) and reset the numbering and completely redo the guide. Plus I have a PCIe dual tuner (And a USB tuner for OTA) and I have to scan both tuners. It's also slow to load so I'm trying to switch so I came back to NPVR because the tuner scan and guide setup is easier and channel rescan doesn't leave me a bunch of duplicate channels some of which won't go away in the guide in MP. It also makes me completely rescan and resetup theo guide on every other upgrade (exactly) for some reason.

I found a workaround, a dual core Atom Windows Tablet (Lenovo) which seems to work good but I'm having a problem with the NPVR server on my desktop just stopping sending the signal to the LAN even though it's still buffering to my RAM drive (I have 16GB RAM with a 6GB Ramdrive) .... That's for a new thread and this one I'll consider closed for now. Basically I just want to stream live TV to a device I can put on my workbench or take out in the garage or on the patio. (I have a WiFi extender just for that)

My setup (sig) streams live TV perfectly anywhere in our house to a quad-core Atom (Win 8.1) tablet using Splashtop.
