I bought a sapphire theatrix 550 pro, which is essentially an ATI wonder elite, and i want to simply make high quality MPEG-2 recordings with it from the composite video or s-video inputs, and thats it, i have o desire to use the TV tuner fucntions. however, i have a few questions for people on here:

1) no matter what i set up the profile quality settings to, it always goes back to "medium" quality settings.

2) what settings do i need to have to enable previewing and recording from my laserdisc player hooked up to the s-video or composite inputs on the capture card?

thanks in advanced for the help

In the config app, it'll always show the medium setting. This is normal. Medium doubles as the 'default' which is used when you do a quick record.

You actually set which recording profile to use when you schedule the recording using the 'record' button. You dont set it in the config app.

That said, I think another user was reporting with the 550 pro using the bitrate specified by the medium or other profile. I've tried to reproduce this yesterday, but it seems to be working fine for me, but I mention it so you're aware. This is unrelated to the config app always showing the medium profile by default.

Its not really the best tool for dubbing from laserdisc, but you could do something like the following:

Add a second capture source for the same card. Set it up for the s-video input. Set the EPG plugin to XMLTV (the 'None' option is broken at the moment), and just put a space in the filename. 'OK' your way out of the config app to save the new capture source. Start the config app again. Go into your capture source, and click the 'Add channel' button. Give it a name of 'SVIDEO' or similar. Give it any old channel number.

Now when you use GB-PVR, you'll be able to schedule a manual recording on the SVIDEO channel, or view it via LiveTV.

when im editing the "direct recording plugin" one of the settings is "board number" .. does this refer to which capture card in my system or to the pci slot that it is installed in?

If you have one 550, then it'll be #1.

Check you set the card type correctly, and that the device is #1.

ok.. it works.. thanks for the advice.. now.. basically ALL the recordings i will be doing with this will be manual recordings..is there a way to preview the video and record on the fly as Im previewing? also, what about stopping a recording? i tried one manual recording so far, and i could choose 30 min length or 1 hour length, etc, but i need to have precise start and stop control , as if i was using a vcr. is this possible with gb-pvr?

As I said, this isnt really the best tool for this sort of job. I know exactly what you're looking for, but this isnt how GB-PVR is designed to work. GB-PVR is about recording TV, not dubbing for video/laser disc etc. If you had a Hauppauge card, I'd suggest using WinTV2000 instead.

You best bet is probably starting live tv (in live preview mode), then pressing the record button to switch to timeshift mode (it'll take a few seconds to switch over), then press stop when you're done.
