This problem has been bugging me since I started using GBPVR. I store my recordings on my external drive since I'm running on a laptop (with Hauppauge WinTV USB PVR2 941). Here's the problem:
I record my programs for the day. They show up of course in the Recordings section with all the nice program info that goes along with it. I don't like leaving my laptop on when I sleep so I turn it off and turn it back on during the morning. At the same time I also turn on my external hard drive. I go to the Recordings section in GBPVR and there are no recordings whatsoever. I know they're still physically there on my hard drive. So now my only option is to add my recordings directory to GBPVR's Video Library. This is pissing me off.

Anybody know what to do? Is the new release going to fix this problem in any way? I tried using Xrecord or whatever it's called but I don't really like it.

if you dont like xrecord the only other thing you can try is video archiver. If you dont like that you are stuck with it.

You can make xrecord look almost like the original recordings. You can disable any of the menus on the left you dont want to see.

The reason you see this happening, is because when GB-PVR loads it's recording list (at startup), it checks to see if the files still exist. If they dont exist at the location originally specified, then it assumes the user has manually deleted the files, so it deletes its entries from the database that refer to these files (to clean up).

No. I dont actually consider it a problem requiring a fix. I know it doesnt suit everybody, but it is operating the way I designed it to.

I am willing to change this behaviour in future but there would need to be a bit of thought put into it - just removing the logic that deletes these entries is not good enough. If I did this, then there would need to be changes in the recordings screen etc, since it doesnt make sense to play files that dont exist etc. Also, leaving the entries in the database after the files are deleted effects the recording logic.

I wonder if that could be the reason why some recordings are disappearing for me... They are on a UNC path, so maybe if the server doesn't respond fast enough, or is down temporarily, GBPVR would purge its DB...

I understand what you're trying to do with the recording service. But the problem is that my external drive is on before Windows XP loads. The stuff is already there for GBPVR to check if the recordings are still there. I'm guessing that the GBPVR recording service loads before Windows can detect my external drive.

I guess I'm one of the few who experience this problem since I don't have desktop PVR's.

Anyways, your work rocks. I tried out Sage and BTV and ended up choosing GB-PVR.

I am using an external firewire drive and have no problems with this. You could try setting GBPVR to start manually rather than automatically once Windows has detected your drive.

This is unfortunate, but I can see how it is necessary.

Where is the DB that is being cleaned up so I can back it up next time?

Hi, I am having a similar problem after I changed the directory I was using for recording videos; I have several shows that I would like to keep in my Recorded list but by changing the directory (and subsequently, GB-PVR deleting the entries from the database), I can no longer see them in the menu listing. I can manually watch them of course, but it is a hassle, since I want to use GB-PVR as the main media app on this box. I would definitely suggest changing this procedure, as this can be a hassle if someone has 100 hrs of recordings and wants to switch to another hard drive...

Just my 2 cents...

Its a well known behaviour and hasnt caused too much hassle so far, so I dont intend to change this any time soon. That said, if you dont like this default behaviour you can set the following setting in your config.xml, but be warned if you move recordings then try to play them in GB-PVR its obviously not going to find the file. This will result in some error.

You know I started reading this post and thought it was interesting. I have a machine I leave on 24-7 and I noticed since the last upgrade a few shows sometimes seemed not to record even thought they said they would be recording soon. Well the wife got pissed at me for some of them not recording and I just said opps I guess I did not record them. After reading this post I went looking around, and found them on my internal drive which is good thing that they did get recorded. The weird thing is the times they did not show up was over night when GBpvr was not stopped and or the machine was not rebooted. So why did they get deleted with I leave the machine up all the time. I did also install and now use XmediaDX 29 build 30 last week. Is there some kind of trouble shooting I can do on my end next time?
