This is my first HTPC and before I make any purchases I would like to run my hardware by some veterans to make sure everything is good. I've been lurking for a while so this is my attempt at an educated post
Case 69.99 nMedia HTPC5000B
Ram 44.99 G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
CPU 60.00 AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz
PS 85.99 Enermax ELT400AWT-ECO
MB 89.99 MSI 785GM-E65 AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX
HD 94.99 Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM
Video Card ???
Total: 445.95
The only differences besides price I can tell are one comes with a remote and one is listed as an encoder. I'm not exactly sure what that means. I'd like to make sure my on board video is good enough for bluray if so I will be adding a bluray drive. Judging other peoples builds I have seen this should have no problem with hulu, netflix, or anything else. I'd like to be able to record HD as well.
I have dish network as my provider if that matters.
I recently switched my EPG from using the MSN_XMLTV scraper 6.5 to Schedules Direct because the scraper was getting an http 404 error every night. I selected SchedulesDirect as my EPG source in config.exe. When I click on UpdateEPG it requests the listings and runs fine. I have set the automatic EPG update time as 2:00AM. However, the updateEPG.bat contains the command line for the MSN_XMLTV_scraper_V.65.exe scraper. I assume the updateEPG.bat batch file is my problem. How do I setup the updateEPG.bat for Schedules Direct or did I do something incorrectly in setting up config.exe for Schedules Direct? I saw references in the the Schedules Direct wiki to native mode and using updateEPG but I don't understand the difference in configurations. Thanks.
I'm trying to reinstall GbPVR (repair) to correct another problem I am having with the PCH connected to my server. However, when I run the install in repair mode it gets almost to the end, and then rolls back. The installation is on my server which is running Windows Server 2003.
I searched the forums and found out how to get an installation log file from the installer, but cannot figure out what is wrong. I have attached the log file in the hope that someone who understands msi logs could point me in the right direction.
I have read some threads about popcorn that now seems to work quite well with GBPVR.
If I choose popcorn :
Can I choose to get recordings via GBPVR interface and sometimes by going directly to NAS (so not to start GBPVR PC for alrease archived recordings) - or will I have to choose either since switching will take long time
is Popcorn as reliable as MVP in uptime no hassle etc?
I plan to use Popcorn without HDD to keep noise down - any issues?
If I go another route?
I guess TVIX M-6500A or other extender will not work?
Using PC as client has some advantages in getting other funcitonality in the livingroom PC
but how will the PC work as client - will it be harder to make work reliably and set up for remote controlling? or is it stable in GBPVR?
I guess one needs extra software and hardware for remotes etc?
so client versus Popcorn ( Where I live Popcorn A110 cost approx 300USD and a client would be 500USD and up)
Hi
I just updated the pvrx2 using nmtinstall. All went well except I get and unhandled exception error from net framework. The error is
Method 'GetActiveTask' in type 'GBPVRX@.xdd215986d9a64c86' from assembly 'PVRX2, Version=1.0.0.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=null' does not have an implementation.
I can hit continue and it starts the MVP Controller.
If I turn off the MVP server the error stop but as soon as I turn it back on the error comes back
Any ideas?
Also now the GBPVR does not work on the popcorn.

Hi, I have been using XP-MC for years now and one of the great things about MC is the wireless linksys extender that I use in my bedroom. Is there any way that the extender (WMCE54AG) could work with GB-PVR?
If not are there any devices out there that can be used as an extender to GB-PVR?
YouTube have made a HTPC GUI version, YouTube XL that is really nice. Navigate with arrow keys and OK. http://www.youtube.com/xl
If you wan´t to have it in you menu and start fullscreen, start config.exe and create a task with Internet Explorer with the -k parameter.
-k http://www.youtube.com/xl
Name it YouTube and a YouTube.png icon will show up in main menu.
I have enclosed a zip with a youtube taskimage for Mayhem3
Give me tips about more "Plugouts", (external tasks with HTPC GUI)
Would be nice if the preview of scanned channels could use the mdapi filters, so that preview of encrypted channels would work. As of now only FTA channels show up in the preview.
This would be nice for situations like we have in Sweden where some channels show up in different Audio configurations. And sometimes the description is more than cryptic like "(Audio #2)". If preview worked one could test and try the channels before selecting which ones to eventually enable.
Not absolutely neccessary funtionality as there are other ways to get around this, but very nice.
Not sure when this happened, but I'm seeing a recording show up in the logs that I've never created. I noticed only after upgrading to a fresh install to version 1.4.7.
The mysterious log entries are in the pending.log file:
The View From the Bay 9/16/2009 3:00:00 PM - 9/16/2009 4:00:00 PM capture-source:2 tuning:7
I only noticed this when I went to record Mad Money and got a conflict with "The View From the Bay".
I don't know if it occured due to the export/import from 1.3.11 to 1.4.7 recordings or it was due to the way I setup another recording called "The View" for my wife. When I did that from the backend PC (my server using PVRX2) I performed a search to find all the "the view" entries. Then I selected only "The View". Then I selected to record entire season on the channel and keep 5 episodes.
Even though I don't see "The View From the Bay" show up in my recordings, it keeps getting listed in the pending.log file even after removing "The View" reoccuring recording.
How can I delete this mysterious recording?
BTW, I looked into my previous version 1.3.11 log files and this issue didn't appear there. I've attached my log files from current 1.4.7.
Clarifying steps:
1. Saved all recordings by exporting from 1.3.11
2. Copied 1.3.11 directories and files to backup location
3. Uninstalled 1.3.11
4. Install fresh 1.4.7
5. Setup 1.4.7 capture sources
6. Imported 1.3.11 recordings into 1.4.7
7. Deleted the reoccuring recordings
8a. re-entered reocurring recordings manually (not sure if this step was necessary but read when you remove a recording device and re-add it back that a prevously re-occuring show may attach to the old device and not record properly)
8b. Re-entered re-ocurring schedules by using the search Guide Setup to record "The View" (all episodes on this channel) to save last 5 recordings by performing a search and typing "The view" in the search. found the entries and selected 1st date.
10. Search for "Mad Money" and did the same setup to record season (all episodes on this channel) to save last 5 recordings
11. Searched for conflicts and Mad Money was conflicting with "The View from the Bay" ?????? (appears "The View" is getting confused with "The view from the bay"
12. Removed Mad money schedule and rescheduled it.
13. Searched for conflicts and again saw it.
14. Removed "The View from the bay" conflicts
15. Removed "The View" reoccuring schedule
16. Recreaded "The view" reoccuring schedule
15. pending.log file still showing entries for "The view from the Bay" even after removing the "The View" re-occuring, but can't delete tall the "The view from the Bay" recordings from the console...
- added ability to schedule to watch a future show. In TV Guide, press play on a show in the future and it'll highlight blue. App will start live tv and switch to that channel at the specified time. Pretty basic, no popup reminders on the screen.
Hi Sub,
I was experimenting with the above feature and this is not working right for me. Not a deal breaker by all means, consider it more as a report. Many more important things to work on.
When I am watching live tv, I open the guide (guide is overlay on live TV) and select a future program for GBPVR to switch to by pressing play in the guide, it does turn blue, i then press guide again and continue watching what I was watching. When the time comes to switch, it does not, it continues on the same channel i was watching before it was suppose to switch channels.
At this point, I hit Exit on the remote (esc) and it then switches channels to the channel it was suppose to switch to.
