Time shifting does not work correctly on RPi4 running Kodi Matrix
Posted by: jmooremcc - 2021-05-04, 06:25 PM - Forum: Kodi / XBMC - Replies (9)

I'm trying to upgrade my nextPVR installation from Kodi 17.6 (Krypton on a RPi2) with a Windows 10 backend server running nextPVR V4 to Kodi 19.0 (Matrix on a RPi4) with the Windows 10 backend server running nextPVR V5. Both Raspberry PIs are running LibreELEC. The installation of V5 appears to have been installed correctly and the time setting for V5 is set to 120 minutes and "time shift" mode. I'm trying to duplicate the setting I have under V4 which allows me to buffer and time shift up to 2 hours while watching live TV.

My objective in upgrading is to improve the overall experience I've had with Kodi. Specifically, I want to improve the accuracy of time shifting which I understand is very much improved under nextPVR V5 and Kodi Matrix.

Unfortunately for me, time shifting has not worked properly with this setup and I have gotten frustrated trying to figure out what I've done wrong. In one of my tests I watched approximately 50 minutes of live TV and then time shifted all the way back to the beginning of the live TV buffer. I had difficulty time shifting forward in time and also had great difficulty getting back to real time. Some time shifting operations were extremely slow while others were a bit faster. Still some time shifting operations took so long I had to hit stop and start over.

The nextPVR addon setting in Kodi Matrix was set for "time shifting" although I also found that time shifting also worked when set to "real time". My experience with Kodi Matrix and the V5 backend was disappointing compared to Kodi Krypton and the V4 backend. I've read about how so many other users have been having a positive experience with Matrix and V5, so if anyone has any suggestions I can follow to improve my experience with this new setup, it will be greatly appreciated. I am including the backend server logs (V5logs-20210501-1832.zip) and the Kodi client logs (kodiMatrix.zip) for your review.

Thank you.

Merging video with web radio (ffmpeg)
Posted by: NumberFive - 2021-05-04, 11:19 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

I'm wondering if anyone familiar with ffmpeg can help with a solution to this.

I have a few web radio stations configured in NextPVR as IPTV channels.  Works well.

I would like to do something a little fancy.  In my idea, I would have a small video file on my local drive, say about a 30 second animation something like a screensaver, and merge that with the incoming web audio stream, creating an AV stream comprised of the local video file looping and the incoming web audio.

I think that above step should be possible with ffmpeg, but then the question is how to get NextPVR to call it and start the process off.  I think I can have ffmpeg setup as a server, but I gather its options are rather basic and it'd probably want to be streaming the audio in 24/7 and not on demand.

Is there a better solution to this?

This is just a little coding challenge or hobby project.  Not mission critical!  Big Grin

  Correcting bad SD data
Posted by: Stanno - 2021-05-04, 08:58 AM - Forum: Windows - Replies (6)

Hi all,

Generally, Schedules Direct do a good job of providing accurate data but there are occasions where information is incorrect.  I usually fix this by modifying npvr.db3 after the recording has been made.

This evening there is a show with bad EPG data so I thought I would try amending npvr.db3 prior to the recording.  I updated the database but when I ran the Windows client, the details reverted to the bad ones.

Is there any way to amend a pending recording and get NPVR to hold the new details?

Thanks,
Stanno

Latest Update - HDHR won't work
Posted by: elTanqueAU - 2021-05-04, 07:46 AM - Forum: Windows - Replies (11)

Hi,
recently updated to the lasted NextPVR version 5.1.1.210329
Since then one of my TV tuners won't work and keep getting an error message "Unable to start stream"
Not sure 100% what part of the log I need to look at, as I have 2 HDHR tuners (Dual & Connect). Connect (newer) works fine.

What I found in the log is:

NextPVR V5, Direct 3D and jaggy menu artifact
Posted by: NumberFive - 2021-05-03, 10:55 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (8)

Just wanted to point out something I noticed.  I know that V5 uses Direct 2D, but being a long tim V4 user I've become tuned to the differences between Direct 2D and Direct 3D.

This thread has another user noting a similar observation - https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?tid=60835

In a nutshell, D3D seems to produce better rendering of fonts and anything involving transparency or shading.  The effect is marginal, but there.  I've attached a screenshot of V4 running with D3D and V5 (running with D2D).

Many of the differences in rendering are subjective.  Arguably the "W" of "Wed" is less jaggy in D3D, others might say the text is more vivid in D2D generally.  I speculate that might be due to D3D rendering gradients / transparency better, but I've not delved into it.  I prefer the D3D look, but then I've been using it for many many years.

There's one bug though which is for sure incorrect.  The transparency effect around the main menu selector.  On V5, there is a cyan coloured jaggy edge which should not be present.  I am familiar with this artifact from V4 as meaning that D3D is not installed.  Installing D3D immediately fixes the issue on V4.

I haven't actually noticed a similar artifact elsewhere, only in this one location thus far.  I guess many people might not see it as it's not the default menu style, but I really like this style.

I've no idea about GUI design or D3D but I'm guessing the objective of using D2D is to keep things simple.  I wonder if this menu issue is something that can be addressed with a tweak to the skin assets?

----
Another minor observation:  Oddly the aspect ratio of V5 seems to be slightly off when windowed, but fine when full screen.  I see very slight letterbox bars on V5 when running 16:9 content no matter how I resize the window, almost as though it's rendering at 1.70:1.  V4 is fine, rendering at 1.78:1.

How does one activate PIP in v5?
Posted by: eastavin - 2021-05-03, 04:20 AM - Forum: Windows - Replies (5)

Hi.  with the hockey play off season just weeks away... it would be good to find out how to activate Picture in Picture to watch more than one channel at a time.  Is this something I have to do from the config.xml for v5?  I dont see any selections for it at the top of the popup window in the client.  I tried to run multiple browser windows thinking that might be the way but did not work.  The first window stops working.

Appreciate tips. Thank you.

Edward

"The response ended prematurely" repeatedly for single program
Posted by: Bobthegoldfish - 2021-04-30, 09:52 PM - Forum: Linux - Replies (38)

I'm having a weird problem with literally a single program.
I'm trying to record "Love Nature: Nature's Strangest Mysteries Solved" and no matter what the timeslot I more or less immediately get "The response ended prematurely".

I am able to record on other channels and on the same channel with no problems, including a similarly named show "Love Nature: How Do Animals Do That". I'm using the current version installed on Mint 20.1. I have tried purging and reloading the EPG, thinking it might have become corrupted but still the same

There's a similar thread here: https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?tid=60343 but they are running it on a Raspberry Pi where I am running it on a bog-standard 64bit PC. Tv tuner is a Hauppauge PCI card recording dvb-t.

Any help appreciated, thanks Smile

  A newbie drive question . . .
Posted by: mspace - 2021-04-30, 09:39 PM - Forum: Hardware - Replies (3)

Hello all!

I'm going to cut the cord from Spectrum by going to Fios (internet only) and setting up an IPTV streaming account.

We are NOT power users. The 1TB tivo has been fine for us.

I'm using my Apple TV 4k, an IPTV app and NextPVR app. The Apple TV will be attached to a secondary router to isolate VPN from our main router. (It's the only way to use VPN with Apple TV)

I have been searching ALL over to understand what kind of external drive to use in this set up. A friend said I do NOT need a NAS drive, which would be redundant with the apps.

So should I get a 2TB regular external drive and USB it to the secondary router? I assume an SSD is preferable, yes? Or do I need to do something else?

Many thanks in advance!
