You probably dont have the appropriate decoder installed for your AVI file.

An AVI file is just container that can contain lots of different types of audio/video data. Some of the more common video types used in AVI files xvid or divx, but there are also lots of other types. Each type requires an appropriate decoder to be installed.

What type of AVI file are you trying to play? If you dont know, you might need to download something like AVIcodec or gspot to check.

yet again it will play fine in VLC.

VLC has built in support for quite a few common AVI types. It doesnt use Directshow decoders, so isnt really a good check of whether your system is setup for playing these types of file. Playing the file in Windows Media Player is probably a good test of whether GB-PVR will be able to play it.

OK, now DVD's and my .avi files work but the transcode menu won't even show up??

how do i convert my files using gbpvr now?

so I'm guessing that I can use this skin?

the default Blue skin seems to work with transcodeing stuff and same with the other skin that I like the "Olbia". Is there a way that I can still use the ContourHC skin?

If it works with the blue skin, then it sounds like the ContourHC skin author just hasnt updated it yet. I suggest you post your request in the 'plugin and skin support' forum.
