Hi,

Can anyone advise what is generally considered to be a good Software MPEG-2 Playback Video Decoder?. I've installed GB-PVR onto a Pentium D PC that has no video codecs pre-installed and am using a Nebula-Electronics USB DVB-T receiver and as far as I'm aware there are no video codecs in the supplied software.

After a quick Google search I'd downloaded from codec-download.de Cole2k Media Codek Pack V5.54 but am not sure whether or not this is a). A legitimate download nor, b). Has installed spyware (hope it has not).

Anyway, there's now a Video Decoder in the Software MPEG-2 Playback Video Decode drop-down menu that seems to work alright (not tested thoroughly though) 'Intervideo Video Decoder'. Not 100% sure what other video and or audio codecs have been installed.

The Video Decoder that I've been using is 'Intervideo NonCSS Video Decoder' however I'm not sure where this was originally installed/downloaded from. Guess that it was supplied with a Hauppauge! WinTV Nova-T-USB2 Driver Cd-Rom.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you Smile.

try a few. uideohelp.com is a good start. the haupauge cd installed the interuidio one, which is fine, but search the forums for a reg edit which unlocks hardwae acceletation (i think...)

As Fuzzweed mentioned; Experimentation is there the best way to determine which codec provides the best playback for your system. I
n my case I ended up purchasing the Nvidia "Pure Video" Decoder. http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo.html
There is a 30 day trial version available if you are interested.

The second best playback I experienced was with the free "Descaler Mpeg2Decoder"
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles..._id=123423

Both of these are decoders (as well as others) are discussed at length in these forums.

Hope this helps,

Regards, Kevin

once youve settled on one that you like, its usually a good idea to unregister any others that youve had on there to prevent them getting in the way in the future...

Hi, Thank you for your reply. Think that http://www.free-codecs.com was one of the web-sites that I'd found last night via a Google search but thank you for the recommendation. Much appreciated.

Interesting to read that your GB-PVR PC is a Mini-ITX one. Tried building a Mini-ITX based PVR and found that an EPIA M10000 Mainboard with 1GHz Nehemiah CPU was under-powered. Jittery video playback etc.

Kind Regards Smile.
