Oops, that was dumb of me... Here are the logs.

Thanks Skippy, I'll give those a try tonight.

There is nothing obvious in the logs. I'd go with Skippy's suggestion.

Have you used the Microsoft Decoder Checkup Utility to check which decoders are installed, and set the system default?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...laylang=en

Last time I looked (which admitedly was a while ago), dscaler didn't have DVD decryption, so while it could play DVDs ripped to the hard drive, it wouldn't play commercial DVDs from the DVD drive and you may need to buy a commercial decoder such as nVidia, Cyberlink, Interviedeo or something similar (or rip DVDs to the hard drive first and play from there).

If it still doesn't work with a commercial decoder (or on a non-commercial or HD ripped DVD), can you play it in Windows Media Player? AFAIK VLC uses its own filters, not Directshow which is what Media Player and GBPVR uses.

If it won't play in Media Player then it's either (still) a decoder problem, or it *could* be the DVD drive region settings.

I've had the same problem playing DVDs off the DVD drive (rather than the hard drive, when they play fine) after a new install of XP. When I tried to play it in Media Player, it loaded the DVD titles but hung on a blank screen with a message "graph not yet built" when I tried to play a title. That was the clue I needed....

I fixed it by going into My Computer, right clicking the DVD drive, selecting Properties, then Hardware. Then select the DVD drive from the list (of HD, CD and DVD devices), select properties, then Location, and change the region to whatever country you're in, or the right country for the DVD's region code (there may be an easier path to do this!).

Seems a new XP install can "forget" the DVD region settings (even though they are set in the drive), and that prevents the graph from being built, so no video and no sound in GBPVR, regardless of which codecs are used (e.g. Intervideo, Purevideo, Cyberlink). PowerDVD would play it, but asked for the region first (another clue).

Once I'd changed the region code, it worked perfectly.

Hope something in here helps you.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Turns out installing the MPV decoder did the trick. To help anyone reading this thread here is what I did:

Download the MPV decoder from:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm

Unzip and copy "Mpeg2DecFilter.ax" to c:\Windows\System32\

Click Start->Run and type in:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\Mpeg2DecFilter.ax

Now MVP Decoder shows up in DVD config of GB-PVR, and voila it works. I use ac3filter for audio so now I have to figure out how to make sure I'm sending 5.1 dts to the reciever over spdif.

One question, is there a way to do slow motion when watching a dvd? Future plans?

Thanks again,

Actually quite easy to do this - load up ac3 filter configuration

under main put a tick in checkbox for spdif

under spdif ensure the following are selected

output format = As Is (no change) and use SPDIF

SPDIF Passthrough = Select all 3 options

SPDIF/DTS mode = Auto

SPDIF/DTS Conversion = Do Not Convert

This should mean stereo is sent as stereo, dts as dts and dolby as dolby

if you don't have an av amp that can detect the different signals, then may want to mess about with the settings, but the above is what i use and it's perfect

Also don't forget to enable the SPDIF / AC3 options in your Soundcard drivers.

If you're using a Soundmax onboard AC97 soundcard, you may find that SPDIF passthrough doesn't work, or that AC3 or DTS gets passed through only as PCM stereo.

If this is the case, you could try setting the Audio Renderer to "Soundmax Digital Audio" or "Default Waveout Device" in the Playback and DVD tabs of GPPVR Config. For some reason some onboard Soundmax AC97 devices don't seem to output properly to the Directsound renderer.

Thanks! I didn't get around to messing with this until last night, but with your suggestions I got it working. It's pretty cool because my Sony receiver has a blue light in the middle that lights up when it's doing multi-channel dts decoding. I saw that light come on for the first time last night!

Thanks again. Can't say enough how cool this software is and how helpful the folks in this forum are!
