I finally got my HDHR setup within GB-PVR (it's a lot easier than with BTV) and can record HDTV. For the time being, I only have a 160GB HD in my HTPC so I was hoping to transcode any HDTV show that I record to Divx to save file space. What would be the best way to do this? I see in the processing tab of Config that dvr-ms and ts can be auto converted to Divx, but I thought I read that it didn't work unless everything was configured properly. Would dvr-ms or ts provide better results after the conversion? I am trying to get ComSkip set up as well and would like that to work even after the conversion. So, to reiterate:

  1. What to I need to convert HDTV to Divx?
  2. What is the best format to record to for the conversion (dvr-ms or ts)?
  3. Will ComSkip still work after the conversion? If not, then how could I make it work?

EDIT: I realize I should mention that I am recording a clear QAM signal from Comcast.

All I can suggest is trying it and seeing how you get on.

To convert from DVR-MS to anything else (using built in transcoding functionality), it first creates a temporary .mpg file by remuxing the file through the Cyberlink mux, so this must have been installed. This step is the potential problem point, since this mux often craps out when dealing with high definition ATSC video.

Yes, it should do.

if you go here, http://www.divx.com/dff/index.php?lang=en&version=pc
apparently DivX pro is available for free for a while.
Not sure what Pro can do over the typical free version though.

I thought I would give it a try. The conversion of mpeg--> divx is a 15 day trial only.

Well, thats not really 'giving it away free' then, is it?
Sorry, spotted it on Digg this morning, and haven't been to my home machine to try it out.

Are you looking to convert it to HD mpeg4 or SD mpeg4?

I also set up GB-PVR with an HDHR in the last week (2 OTA inputs). I'm recording to TS files and then following the same method I've used for over a year with great results on my MyHD HD files.

Open file in VideoRedo, edit if desired, save as MPG2 with no changes to resolution, bitrate, etc. Use AutoGK to convert that file using Xvid. I've found Xvid produces smaller files at better quality than DivX. A one hour show gives excellent quality at 700-800 MB filesize, 944 width, original audio.

I probably should note that I'm not using GB-PVR to play the files, transcode them, or any other functions besides scheduling and recording. I'm playing the HD files, and the AVI transcodes, from another computer with ZoomPlayer 5.0.
