But playing the same file through video library works fine!
Thought I had everything sweet:
Intervideo non-css video decoder
Nvidia audio decoder
DVR-MS flux capacitor

Until I tried to play some older recordings - blank screen, no audio, and the PC locked - only option to re-boot.
But the same file plays fine through video library, or if I change the audio decoder to anything other than Nvidia.
Recent recordings are fine, so just curious about this...

They obviously answer seems to be use some other audio decoder then. I'm not sure what the nvidia audio decoder doesnt like about these files, but if it doesnt like them then is probably the only other option.

Yes this is an easy fix - but I like the Nvidia audio decoder for two reasons:
1. It solved the slight lip-sync issue I was getting using Intervideo audio
2. It is a cheap way of getting Dolby Surround if you use 4 or 5 speakers on your PC - although DVB-T in the UK only provides stereo sound, many films do have dolby surround / prologic encoded into the two channels.
I will try FFdshow for audio instead...

I dont really know what to tell you. GB-PVR doesnt really get any say over how things will behave when you use specific decoders. GB-PVR suggest to directshow which decoders should be used, then directshow takes care of all the playback from that point on. If it misbehaves with this audio decoder, then unfortauntely there isnt really anything I can do.

Ah well no great loss - I can continue using Nvidia for audio, but watch the offending recordings through the video library instead of the recordings menu.
The Nvidia codecs sure are quirky - the purevideo start-bar icon only seems to show up when it feels like it! Plus I never did see any advantage using it for video - I prefer the Intervideo video decoder. Maybe because I have an older video card, as I think you need an Nvida => 6xxx range to take advantage of it's advanced deinterlacing...
I was just puzzled why only some recordings were effected, and even then why they would play from video library not from recordings:confused: But I just realised that video library is probably using a different codec...

It should be exactly the same. Both recordings and video library just as the video player to play the file. It runs all the same code etc.

OK this problem has been solved by setting the decoder to system default instead of Nvidia decoder.
Although I had read of this fix before, it was usually associated with the different issue of the Nvidia icon not showing up in the task bar.
However it has also solved my problem of recordings not playing & locking GBPVR...
I know this is a Purevideo issue and not GBPVR - but is was definately causing odd problems when Nvidia was chosen as the decoder instead of system default..

Have settled on Nvidia decoders now for video and audio - not because of any perceived improvements in picture quality, but because of the little-discussed audio features of the Purevideo decoders...
Many of us have PC's with the option of surround-sound speaker configurations, and the Purevideo decoder can take full advantage of this. In particular with four or more speakers you get great surround from DVDs, and good dolby surround from any film shown on TV that has dolby.
A surround-sound system for no extra cost? - Yes please!
Only slight issue is that the Nvidia codec does not work on AC3 audio on XviD and DivX files - so I use FFshow for AC3, which can also use whatever speakers you have connected to the PC...
