Hibernating XP - upgrade to Vista? Advice please!

I cannot get my machine to consistently wake from hibernation - it freezes solid as the progress bar reaches the end, the screen goes blank and a reset is needed. This is an XP problem according to Microsoft - on PCs with at least 1 GB RAM (I have 2). It's intermittent, hasn't responded to a complete reinstallation of XP and no fix has been offered by M$. If I just use standby I get the old "IR hardware hasn't initialised" error on my HVR1300. I've tried setting up gbpvrwake.exe but that throws up an error and won't run in the background at startup. I'm really stuck.

So my question is - should I just upgrade to Vista? Has anyone had hibernation problems like this with Vista? Does the HVR1300 work OK with it? Anything I should know about running GB-PVR on Vista?

I always use hibernate on my XP Pro SP2 system with 2gb RAM - never a problem. So can you post a link to the MS article about this? Maybe it is only a problem with certain hadware...

Interesting support article from MS - not very helpfull though!
However it does say for more info go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907477/ and on this page it says:
This article describes how to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Microsoft Windows XP. You may experience abnormal behavior when a computer enters or leaves hibernation or standby. This behavior may be caused by one of the following issues:
• Outdated system firmware
• Peripheral firmware
• Incompatible drivers
• Hardware that does not correctly support hibernation and standby

I do empathise as I used to have all sorts of problems with my PC failing to come out of standby properly, in my case caused by drivers - first one version of the Hauppage software, then drivers for a Trust sound card I had then. New Hauppage drivers and replacing the sound card got it working for me. I can only suggest removing add-on cards, along with their associated drivers, to try and trace what device causes this issue...

A long and unpleasant job, but I might give it a go when I have a spare weekend (My wife hates it when I dismantle computers in front of the TV...).

Or... I could upgrade to Vista.

Has anyone had hibernation problems with Vista? I'd be particularly interested if you have an HVR-1300 or a Terratec Cinergy 24001 DT.
