I'm thinking of switching to GBPVR and using it with my Hauppauge HVR-1600. WinTV installs Hauppauge's HCW video and audio decoders which result in store-bought DVDs not playing anymore in Windows Media Player and no sound on DVDs created with the HVR-1600. So, my days as a WinTV user will soon come to an end.

Now for my GBPVR questions. Can it be tweaked to allow a 4 mbps bitrate for recording? I can't seem to get it to 4 in WinTV. Also, I was testing out GBPVR a few days ago, and noticed that the file that was created was out-of-synch despite being run through VideoRedo TVSuite. Is there a fix for this? Also, is there a way for programs to have closed captions appear during live TV as well as on the finished DVD? I do like the fact that no decoders are installed with your software, and that is one of the biggest reasons I will switch to GBPVR.

I cant think of any reason why you couldnt tell it to make analog recordings at 4 mbps constant or variable bitrate. I havnt specifically tried it - this NTSC/ATSC card isnt used here New Zealand.

Digital recordings will use whatever bitrate the broadcaster is transmitting it with.

Where was it out of sync? Was this problem noticed when playing it back in GB-PVR or somewhere else?

I'm not away of sync issues in GB-PVR. The few times it has popped up in the past, users have usually been able to fix it by changing audio video decoders that they're using for playback (or changing the audio renderer).

I'm not really sure what the story is for closed captions with the HVR1600. GB-PVR doesnt really have any support for close captions since its not a system we use here in NZ, but some owners of PVR150/250/350/500 devices have had them working by ticking the checkbox on the misc tab of the config app, then using the intervideo decoder.

When I don't lose any mpeg-ts packets, I find the picture quality of digital mpeg SD streams at 2-3 Mbs much better than anything I've been able to record from analog at even the highest bit rate. Their broadcast quality encoders must make a difference.

Thanks for the reply. In GBPVR, where would I go to tell the program to record at 4 mbps? I noticed the file being out of synch when I played it in Windows Media Player. The Hauppauge HCW decoders may be fouling things up. I am going to do a clean install of XP and install GBPVR. Thank you, men, for your replies. They're appreciated.

When you setup your analog capture source, on the screen where you select you card type, you can edit the quality profiles at the bottom of that screen.

Edit the 'medium' profile if you want it to apply to the 'quick record' feature aswell.

I don't see that setting there. Which tab is it under? I am in the config program. Furthermore, how do I know which recording source and EPG source to use?

See below for the "where". As I mention earlier in the thread - this only applies to analog recordings. Digital recordings use whatever bitrate the broadcaster chose.

Most Canadians use the Schedules Direct service for their listings, but some use alternative sources for their EPG tv listings.

Thank you, sub. One question. I've set the bit rate to 4000. What is this bit rate PEAK all about?
