I opened it up & put a higher quality ball bearing fan in it.
I used a case fan so it runs off the PSU itself.

I now can only tell the PC is on when I mute the audio & nobody is talking.

I did the same thing. I picked up a 'quiet' fan at Fry's. The important thing is to look at the DB rating of the fan. Personally, I find 18 db acceptable, but you may want to go lower.

I was surprised to see the rating for the one on the newegg link was 26dB - I would've rated that as high(ish). It seems fans with lower noise levels often have a lower top speed and consequently lower air-flow so it's a case of finding a balance.

I've found a cheap-ish fan on a UK supplier's site which is rated at 20dBA and 25CFM - I think that'll suit my needs.

Cheers,
Brian

There's also an add-on thingy that I found at Frys and use it for front case fans. I'm not sure what the exact name of it would be, but you plug your fan into it on one end, and plug the other end into the fan plug on the mobo, and then you can adjust the fan voltage up and down (this slows / speeds the fan) which can also reduce noise. Of course, you also reduce airflow...
