This statement is made a lot and can be misleading. The MVP can't do HD, period. What you are saying is that your transcoder does a reasonable job of changing HD into SD and then the MVP does its typical job of playing SD.
I do think the HD and even xvid files transcoded to MVP compatible mpeg-2 by ffmpeg looks better than the hardware mpeg-2 files I make from myr PVR 150 or HVR 1600.
