HDMI capture

hey,
I was thinking about getting HD digital cable and was wondering if they make HDMI capture cards. I know my old digital cable i could just use an IR blaster to run the cable box and then i could pick up the results out of the box. If they made an HDMI capture card then i could pickup whatver was coming out of my cable box in HD, anyone have any ideas thoughts or leads on sucj a device?

I believe they exist but the price is out of reach of most consumers. You can capture HD from the component output of your HD STB with the HD-PVR from Hauppauge:

It works well and I doubt you'd be able to tell much difference from HDMI vs. component.

Or you may be able to capture clear QAM directly from the cable with a QAM-capable capture card but cable cos. often make only the local digital channels available in clear QAM, if that.

Or, get the DVR that your cable co. offers.
