It was sitting at 1280x768... should have been 1360x768! Line is now back. Text is also clearer, but icons are still ugly . Thanks for the help on this one.
It has however highlighted another problem which wasn't there (or maybe not evident) with the wrong resolution. I'm now getting tearing in pan shots. I thought I had that sorted.

Only place I found this for nvidia was in the 3d graphics section. "Force On" had no effect.
I've got a Sony LCD TV and have both VGA and HDMI inputs:
-in VGA: 1360x768 (native resolution) - works great, no tearing, no overscan, but picture looks a bit washed out.
-in HDMI: 1360x768 - tearing, slight overscan, picture looks the best.
1280x720 (not native, not 768 as previously indicated) - no tearing, slight overscan, picture looks pretty good but I get the scaling issues.
Spent a few hours on this... just can't seem to get the perfect solution to this one. PowerDVD dislays the same symptoms, so not something related to GBPVR.
