I have a 4:3 TV, but receive lots of 16:9 HD channels; in turn those channels often broadcast a 4:3 frame pillarboxed into the 16:9 frame. Without a negative aspect ratio setting, those shows appear in a box in the middle of the screen, which looks ridiculous. Also, even most 16:9 shows here largely waste the extra area of the screen beyond the standard 4:3 frame, so there's little benefit in seeing the full 16:9 frame.

Hmm.
Well, if you do not use DXVA,then WMR9 FSE should be OK.
SAF use FFDshow video decoder for MPEG-2 live TV - i think you can setup aspect ratio here too.

Grab the standalone filters x86 zip file

Extract MP4Splitter.ax to somewhere where you are comfortable leaving it, after we register it we will need it to remain or we would need to unregister and re-register it in a new location. I suggest C:\codecs\x86

Then register it with the following command in a command prompt
"regsvr32 C:\codecs\x86\MP4Splitter.ax" w/o the quotes (")
Hope this helps, there are other effective filters and splitters in this package try them out if you want.

Ah, thanks pBS and crlorentzen. I uninstalled SAF from my desktop box, and installed just the MP4Splitter. Sure enough, my .mp4 file renders and plays fine in GraphEdit using just the Microsoft decoders. I kinda thought that it was just the splitter that I was missing. WMP must have it's own splitter (or equivalent thereof), but I figured it still had to be using the Microsoft DTV-DVD decoders.

By the way, I have nothing against Hoborg's SAF and applaud Hoborg for his work. I just prefer to find out exactly how something works rather than having to depend on a magic 'black-box' solution.
