Windows XP - Latest Updates
ATI Radeon HD 4350 with latest driver and (catalyst package)

Latest version of Gb-PVR

tried powerdvd codec, tried MPC codec (DXVA not enabled)

Tried EMR and overlay can't use another other as apparently my os doesnt support...

Whats going on here, I have tried other codec and had ffshow installed at one stage, uninstalled, am I going to be able to correct this with XP version of windows and without reinstalling? This is very poor supprt in the way this works, going to check to see if I can use media player or another player to use HD H.264 hardware acceleration now I think might just be through GB-PVR but not 100% sure yet.

please post, email me back, this sounds like a common problem

DXVA is all about the video decoder that you choose ... GBPVR has little to do with whether you get DXVA or not.

You can configure many decoders by pressing the (...) button beside the decoder selection box on the Playback tab.

If your preferred decoder is giving you DXVA in some other player, it should also give you DXVA with GBPVR.

The PowerDVD codec behaves a little differently. It saves it settings based on the executable name so even if you set DXVA in Config.exe, it may not be set for PVRx2.exe. There are some registry entries that you can set for it though. Just do a search for "PowerDVD" and "registry".

whurlston is absolutely right.

I've got the same card and tried powerdvd 9, and 10, and tried to enable DXVA with the checkbox in setup but no acceleration. I had to create a new key in the registry for pvrx2 and then add both the hardware acceleration and deinterlacing DWORDs to get DXVA to work. One of the things I found was that since I wanted the card to do the deinterlacing, I had to set powerdvd to "Force weave", if I left it in "auto" then CPU usage would still be 80% to 90%. Changing that setting brought CPU down to 25%-45% on 1080i OTA broadcasts; less than 10% on Svideo capture from Directv box.

The way I went about finding the right reg settings was to open up the registry, look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cyberlink\Common. Pdvd9 settings are listed under CLCVD key, Pdvd10 is under CLVSD, and you will see the different apps listed (Pvrx2 was not listed). I used the graphedit key to see which settings were listed, I then created the key PVRX2 and in that key created the same settings I found in the graphedit key. Then I started graphedit (with Pdvd10 as the decoder for GBPVR), rendered a 1080i recording, and looked at CPU usage (it was low) then at the filter properties. I found that the DXVA box was checked already as was the "Force weave" box. Then I went back to the registry, created all of the same DWORDs that were in the graphedit key into the new PVRX2 key. This will allow changes to the sliders for brightness, etc. but it also allows turning on DXVA and changing deinterlacing. The UIUseHVA DWORD is for DXVA (set to 1) and the UIVMode is for deinterlacing (set decimal value to 4 for Pdvd9 and 65540 for Pdvd10). I double checked CPU usage with task manager and in the "Overdrive" page of Catalyst 10.5 and they were pretty close to each other, no more stuttering in 1080i broadcasts and the crawler at the bottom of the screen is smooth.

There is also a hack for the HKLM part of the registry but using it by itself did not enable DXVA. I'm not certain where I found it, so if you want to PM me, I can give it to you.

Good luck,
Dave

What you choose in gbpvr isn't always what you get. There's a weird hierarchy for the installed codecs and some can "take over" your system, ffdshow being one of those. I have XP and DXVA works perfectly. I suggest downloading a program called GraphStudio. Choose a file to render, then see what codecs are used in the graph which is built. These are the codecs that gbpvr will use. If the wrong ones are used, "unregister" them with GraphStudio. Eventually the correct one will be chosen and you should have DXVA working.
