Now that Ive finally moved to a 16/9 tv, I should state my path is to eventually have my netbook or a full pc running NPVR and output via hdmi to this new tv (hd output from the netbook is fantastic in a trial ).

That being said, I need a meanwhile solution.
I know the MVP doesnt do fancy hd.. but what is the proper way to config the gbpvr xml file (the ntsc transcode line and the MVP MAC lines), and do I switch the mvpmc config screen to 16:9 mode also ?
Also, does it make much difference outputing from the MVP via S-video vs RCA ? I dont think I can see a difference (but my other settings as per above may be bad).

Thanks for any tips.. Ive sorta drifted off of this forum with the advent of NPVR, but Im close to rejoining the flock. Smile Xmas season prep, a promotion at work and a big push in work there are eating up my time (and mind).. oh, not to mention the 3 and 7 yr old boys.. lol

Cheers

Hi Dave72, I saw you lurking and figuring it was getting too cold for you.

If you use mvpmc there is very little you have to do. You can change the aspect ratio using the Hauppauge software/dongle combination, or simply add the aspect ratio on the command line -a 16x9

When playing video mvpmc reads the aspect ratio flag in the mpeg file so it won't be letter-boxed if properly flagged.

The menus and GBPVR screens will be SD 640x480 because of framebuffer limits, how it looks and stretches is your preference. You may have more or less overscan in analog(ue) that is really a factor of your monitor.

SD output on HD monitors vary greatly, and you will probably find most of your recorded content adequate at best. My suggestion is to rename a DVD vob file to mpg and play it to get the best quality output (16x9) preferred and then do another test on the analog outputs.

Good luck,

Martin

Thanks Martin,
What would you recommend on the <MVPFFmpegTranscodeCmdLineNTSC> line ?
I do have some avi and various other formats as well as that large mpeg library all down/upconverted to 640x480 (that'll teach me..lol)

You should set the on-the-fly transcoding quality to the best quality your PC can deliver, maybe start with the simple -i infile -sameq -target ntsc-dvd outfile /y
