mvallevand Wrote:Ok well maybe instead of easy I should have said straight forward. You get to choose your own static IP, just make sure the IP is outside the range you assign in your router to dhcp clients. You use the router IP as your gateway IP not the IP of your PC.

Okay, I see the 'range' setting in the router setting now. So I will give it a try.

Jaggy, thanks for adding to this.

Ooops...

Before I go ahead, is it possible to set static IPs for the two NMT's ???

Is that advisable -or NOT advisable?

Thx

Jaggy, thanks for helping,

Now that I know it can be done and it works - I'll try to learn how to set the NMT with a static IP.
After I get static IP for the NPVR machine working Wink

Thx,

FWIW I don't use a static IP for me 3 NMT clients, or any of the other extenders I have. The only advantage is knowing which IP to use for telnet or to use fo a drive you want to share or ftp to in your NMT.

I found my router sometimes got screwed up (normally after a power cut) & would assign the same IP to more than one device, so decided screw this & assigned static IP's to anything I could.

Also, you probably want to look up how to change the range of IP addresses your router assigns. It usually starts with X.X.X.1 (192.168.2.1 in your case). Change that to start with something like 192.168.2.10 & have your NPVR Server use something below 192.168.2.10 (like 192.168.2.4). That way you won't have to worry if you turn on other devices before your NPVR server & one of them grabs the IP address it wants to use.

Elihu,

Thanks for adding that useful tip!

Another setting on static IP for you PC will be the DNS. You can use your router IP which uses your ISP defaults but I like OpenDNS. Another fast and easy to remember one is google's 8.8.8.8 if google doesn't gather eough data on you now.
