Detecting the problem and some ideas for correcting it are covered well in the Silicon Dust FAQ here. This was causing me a great deal of frustration for well over a year before I ran the tests mentioned in the FAQ. Since everything else was working fine I had no idea my network was experiencing a small % of packet loss. In the end my solution was simply to force my nic to operate at 100Mbit instead of gigabit speeds.

Thanks! I will definitely run these tests. This seems more likely to me to be the issue than the audio decoder.
