Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone has seen something similar.

My wife has a cordless optical mouse (Logitech "Cordless Click! Plus") which a day or two ago (she can't remember exactly) started to 'freeze' after a short time of inactivity.

Example, she'll open her email client, select a message and click 'Reply'. She then types her reply and then goes to move the mouse cursor to click 'Send' but the cursor is frozen on the screen. Clicking either left/right mouse buttons or using the scroll wheel re-instates cursor movement again.

I've been playing with it for a while and it doesn't seem to freeze as long as it's moving - I spent a minute or more just moving the cursor around the screen. Leaving it alone for perhaps just 15-20 seconds, however, causes the freeze.

I've searched Google and found a variety of things but none seem to apply. In most cases, the freeze is either temporary and the cursor will move again after a few seconds without intervention or, alternatively, the freeze is permanent and requires a reboot. Nothing like her problem where a click of a button or scroll of the wheel resolves things.

I've checked the driver and it's the same as she has always had and she hasn't installed any new software or hardware. Very strange - any ideas? Anybody seen anything similar?

Cheers,
Brian

That was my thought, too. I've seen similar, unpredictable behavior with various cordless mice here when the batteries are low. Still working part of the time, but erratic movement, response, etc.

It had crossed my mind but the fact it restarts with a click or scroll confuses the issue. It's rechargeable and should flash its LED when it's low - I'll stick my voltage tester on it (when I can remember where I put it).

Try flinging a normal, corded mouse back in for a few days and verify that it is actually the Logitech that's causing the problem.

I've got a cheap Te$c0 cordless optical mouse and it's always exhibited that behaviour - I just assumed it was a power saving thing...

Is it possible that the time value for when the power save kicks in has changed?

Well, thanks for the responses. I checked the battery voltage and it's what I'd expect. I checked all the power settings but found nothing that would indicate it was power-saving. Eventually I decided to check the Logitech site for an updated driver (despite the one being used is the same as it has always been)...

There's a much more recent version of SetPoint (the Logitech keyboard/mouse settings app) so I installed that and it has also updated the driver even though it didn't mention it included a new driver. After that I left the thing sitting there for a good 10 minutes and the problem seems to have gone.

I forgot to ask my wife if this was happening every time she started her machine or if only sometimes - perhaps I just got lucky but hopefully it has fixed it. Very strange - if it is fixed, we'll probably never know why it suddenly started happening a couple of days ago.

CHeers,
Brian
