No nlite will need work to run now and no one AFAIK did anything to get ti to work. I have written a version of yauiclient but it is still work in progress.

Just use Kodi on the RPi and even better use LibreELEC to get h/w playback.

Kodi is a steaming pile of crap that I have no interest in ever letting touch my hardware again. Navigation is a joke, maintenance is a pain, I can find no single good thing to say about it.

I struggle to understand why one would build server software without a client that can actually use it. I thought coming up with a way to simply turn on a pi and have it play tv would be an easy starting point for ideas I have - I just do not understand how we got to this point that no one has come up with working solutions for hardware to simply work.

Suit yourself. No RPi even the RPi5 without LibreELEC can be considered good hardware player, it has nothing to do with the server, you have low end hardware that needs special clients to play problem free. You can use Android clients streaming NextPVR from the RPi if you wish.

What does LibreELEC and Kodi have that's so special that you can't build into a client solution for a pi to be a standalone TV?

Nothing, except the LE team has a lot of RPi experts. Building a client solution is much more than just the client. Just developing the support system for the IR, BT and CEC remotes is an incredible amount of work so you still would need LE as a base and then figure out how to replace the client.

You are free to try, I am not an RPi fanboy there are much better clients available.

Do you have a recommendation that would be in the same size range as a pi, that could do a better job of it?

Have you looked at mini PC's? They come in all sizes and prices and some are super quiet.
