with latest reader4 i'm still getting problems starting hdpvr, but i notice i can't get too close to 'live' or i experience same behavior....
so seems like it's trying to read info that's not ready yet...
i have to stay a few seconds back or it freezes like at startup. it plays again by skipping back a few secs...
confirmed, i have to stay at least 4 secs behind live[according to timeline at top] no matter how long it's been playing, or i get freeze like at startup.

I hope that helps some..Big Grin

That's exactly what I've seen as well. Jittery to start up and then stabilizes. If you skip back and then try to return to live tv, it gets stuck so you have to stay several seconds behind.

Perhaps related, bringing up the OSD or guide makes the video extremely choppy and lots of frames are dropped.

Sgilani, if when you bring up guide or OSD it's choppy, then it's a video card or codec problem..[not enough horsepower to do both]
what video chipset do you have? what codecs for mpeg2?
what is your cpu load like when watching video? when watching video with OSD/guide up?
i suspect higher than normal..

you are using evr renderer right?

I didn't have the problem before v4.0.4.

Its an Intel J1900 quad core 2.4 GHz box, which I believe is Bay Trail.

Currently using Cyberlink for both mpeg2 and mpeg4, switching to other decoders doesn't change the behavior. CPU load around 10% while watching video. Using EVR.

I'm fairly sure this is a NPVR issue, using Kodi as an NPVR client on the same machine works just fine with no troubles. (cpu load similarly stays around 10% there too)

hmmm, yea i have one of those but only dual core version, and it seems to do fine..
still think it's a video chip related problem, maybe drivers or directx.. pretty much any video card thesedays should have enough grunt to do overlays..
only times i've ever seen that was when the video display chain was choking somewhere. [drivers/hardware/windows subsytems]
that video uses shared main memory, maybe max out in bios..[i think you need at least 256m for 1080p]
kodi doesn't use any of the stuff in question really, no directx, no windows susbsystems, few advanced modes of video card, mostly just cpu
with same cpu usage, seem like decode acceleration is ok..
does cpu go over 15% when osd is up?

CPU still stays around 9 to 11% when the OSD is up. I'll check the bios settings, but that seems unlikely to be the issue.

I just tested, the problem does not occur when watching a recording. No choppiness. It's only during live TV that this happens.

For fun, I switched my *audio* decoder from LAV to ffdshow. (Bitstream mode in both, so it really shouldn't matter). Lo and behold, OSD only causes a slight jitter now, totally manageable. I never imagined an audio decoder that's just bitstreaming could do this, but there you go.

with latest updates, hdpvr "kinda" works now, it plays live tv fine while in memory, but if you pause so disk buffer is used and get to between 1-4 seconds behind 'live' it freezes again...
so only 'live' and 4+ secs behind live work.

Aha! But i have found out why it changed, i set <hdpvrbufferlonger> to false and it works for livetv and 4+ secs behind.
if i set it to true, livetv no longer works, only 4+ secs behind live....startup freezes until i skip back 4 secs..

Ok, I'll check this out. At least you have a work around for now.

ah, interesting. I've always had that set to false. The 'restart on channel change' has to be set to true for me, otherwise I get no playback after a channel change (happens with hdpvr2 on three different PCs I've tested it on).
