Extend Remote

I have a similar setup with my PVR and TV in different rooms. I created a 25ft cable using regular cat5 (not cat5e, although it would have worked to). I cut the IR receiver cable in half and soldered each end to the cat5 cable and everything works fine. There are three conductors in the IR receiver portion of the cable. I'm using a PV150 and I beieve the remote is the 45 button remote.

I took the "Eye" down to Radio Shack and purchased one 15 meter and one 8 meter sandard mini-stareo extender cables. Worked great.

If money is not a problem why not try a remote extender also available at RS.

I have not Tried this solution but I have used a RadioShack remote with a remote extender (also avialble under the One For All brand) The remote can be configured via JP1 prgraming to do everthing the stock Hauppauge remote does (and more). With the remote extender You have no need for wires or extra hardware.

X-10 X-10 site also has video and remote solutions that extend video and remote signals. Includinig RF remotes that could replace your Hauppauge remote.

I may be missing something really obvious here with this thread but I can't seem to get my setup to work. I've got the PVR-150 card with the included Hauppauge remote. My PC is in a different room than my Sat receiver. I need to extend the IR transmitter (emitter) from my PC to the Sat box. The emitter must be placed directly on the IR reciever on the sat box for it to work. I've tried two different approaches.

1. bought a stereo extention cable from radio shack (20 feet). The IR reciever part works fine with this extention cable but the transmitter (emitter) does not work. My guess is that the jack is the problem. The IR blaster jack has 3 rings on it and the standard stereo extention cable jack only has 2 rings.

2. I bought a wireless remote extender from radio shack. I tried to use this to extend the IR blaster transmitter to the sat reciever. It didn't work. My guess is that the IR blaster transmitter is too low power as it only works within 2 inches from the sat reciever (unlike a standard remote control)

Is there an easier way to do this without cutting my IR blaster cable?

Just I'm clear on what you've done. You are uing both the receiver AND the transmitter parts of your cable? And both work after extending the entire cable? And you didn't have to cut/splice your original cable?

Yes, your extension cable must also have "3 rings" (ie "stereo" in the audio world)

I had problems with my blaster not working right. First off all the window on the ir reciver on the satbox was convex so only a bit of the tape stuck. it came off. Second it was tinted color cover.

I tool my sat box apart and mounted the blaster right next to the reciever eye. Works well (apart from the lag in the system) and looks cleaner.

Just have to find a way to stop some channel changes from triggering on stcreen menu from the sat box. Real pain in the a...s if one has recorded a film with a overlay menu ontop!
