Hi,

I wondered if the following would work and how well.

I have three networks at home and 3 MVP

192.168.1.0 setup as Room 1
192.168.2.0 Setup as Room 2
192.168.3.0 Setup as Room 3

Each of these networks has its own router and connects to the server network 192.168.0.0

If i run GBPVR with the MVP Server bit running on the 192.168.0.0 network will the mvp's connect to this server as they are on different networks.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

The MVP sends out I believe a bootp request. You will probably need to setup a bootp helper on the router to forward the request otherwise the request will stay local and never make it to the server. TFTP works the same way.

Hi,

As others have pointed out, this setup will probably run into difficulty because of the bootp/dhcp protocol that the MVP needs to contact the server. Bootp / dhcp is a broadcast protocol that needs an unrouted network. To make this protocol traverse a router, you need to configure bootp relaying on the router.

But my first question is: why use routers instead of a simple switch? Switches are much easier to configure, cheaper, and usually have a higher throughput. Unless of course you have a large, segmented network, or you need to cover large distances.

Ahh so it uses bootp. Cool.

Its more secure as you can control easilly what traffic can pass between each of the networks. Infact they actually arn't routers they are Cisco 3350 with EMI software. This makes the switch into basically 24 routers if you want to?
