Ultra VNC has been giving me fits lately. Sad

I set up a Dyndns.org account some time ago, all has been working fine from outside my network until about a week ago. It takes about 5 minutes after I input my password for the screen to show up (when it shows up) and promptly crashes. (Broadband internet connections at both end.) I am not using any plugins for encryption or anything. Here is the weird part.... on my internal network it works great!

Anyone ever have anything like this happen? I set up the "http" version of VNC (runs in a java enabled browser window) which also works inside the network, outside it just times out.

I am begining to wonder if the issue is VNC or if it is my router. I have a Netgear WPN824 RangeMAX router. Love the router, throws a WiFi signal a looooooong way... BUT if it won't let me in then something has to change. I have a couple WGR614v3's laying around at home that a buddy gave me, might give one of those a try this weekend. Also RDP times out and will not let me connect from outside either, from inside its fine. More and more it is making me think it is the router. Appropriate ports are open, and the router responds to ping and tracert commands.

Normally I am a Linksys guy, but went with the RangeMAX when we moved into the new house and needed a bigger coverage area... a couple of my buddies had them and were having no issues (which is odd for a Netgear! LoL) and absolutely loved them. I am wondering now if maybe I should have gone with a WRT54g?

So if anyone has experienced this with VNC or issues like this with their router, please let me know.

Much appreciated, thanks! Smile

Not wishing to advise Grandmother about sucking eggs- have you set VNC to "rate limit mouse move events"? I banged my head on random disconnects for ages with VNC. This setting fixed it for me. Hope it helps.

Yes I really do think that it is VNC that crapping out. While I was home on lunch, I swapped out the WPN824 for one of the WGR614v3's that I had chillin' about. Its still doing the same thing.... Sad I have heard of tightVNC and even downloaded it at the same time I downloaded UltraVNC. I have heard many good things about UlraVNC. I have heard people say that they use tightVNC but no one that was ever wild about it. I like VNC and the multiple ways it will work (viewer and http) and really don't want to go back to RDP or uggh......PC Anywhere.

No I have not... I will give that try. Thanks!

No GB-PVR is fine... its VNC that crashes.

I use tightvnc. It's not as fancy as far as features and gui options like ultra, but I find it faster. Like tipster said, I would try uninstalling and reinstalling, the server service for vnc might have just gone stupid. It happens.

Yeah... I will have to wait until I am out of work... as RDP still doesn't want to answer either. Sad

I am wondering... it works on my local network. Could Charter (my ISP) be blocking the ports because it is residential and not a business modem? RDP and VNC both work on the LAN at the house... so maybe its not VNC and it is Charter... I hate Charter. I would so go DSL but I don't want a phone line and Verizon won't sell me naked DSL.

Charter is known for blocking ports, but back when I had them, they only blocked the well known service ports ( < 1024) and VNC runs on 5900. They might have further locked it down so you can't host anything, not sure.
