How do you decrease the bitrate on an Mpeg 2. I record in High Mode using GB-PVR then use Nero Vision II to burn my dvd's. I have a few movies that are too large to fit on a DVD so I'm kinda in a bind. Nero Vission II has an option to Burn anywhere from High to Super Long play kinda like VCR's (EP/SP/LP). I set it for Super Long Play but it's still too Large. I'm off by .32 in size. I've trimed the video right up to the movie so I can't edit any more of the movie....

Does capturing in medium quality make a huge difference when your source is a VHS tape...... I'm thinking that would solve my file size issue when burning to DVD. As for now I need to find out how to shrink the movie to the correct size.

Thanks

Thanks again.

when you configure the capture source, edit the medium quality and give it smaller number of variable bitrate like 2000-2700.

If you author mpeg for DVD burn, you can specify it to make an iso image. Then you can use DVDshrink to reduce it to fit DVD.

I saved the Mpeg2 file as an iso and then tried opening it up in DVD Shrink. I did however encounter an error in DVD Shrink while trying to open the Iso. I went to File then Open Disc Image. This is the message I recieved, " Invalid UDF File System "

From mpeg2 videos, you have to use program like Ulead Movie Factory or other author software to authorize it for burning to DVD. Iso image size is not matter at this stage because DVDshrink can reduce it to fit into the right size for DVD burn.

Hi Dan.... Thanks for the help by the way
Yeah, I'm a little new at this so you may have to explain this to me.
When you say author software to authorize it for burning to DVD, I'm
not sure what you mean. I have Nero and I also have VirtualDub.
Will either of these work?

What I did to get the iso image was tell Nero to make an Image of my movie that was in Mpeg2 format. I went to Data DVD and chose iso. Did I go about this the wrong way?

I have not specifically use Nero or VirtualDub, so I don't know the specific steps.

As for Ulead Movie Factory, I open a project for DVD disc output, then add mpeg2 to the project. It will indicate whether the video is larger than 4.7 GB. Next step is to edit chapter and menu. Then I am ready to produce the output as create DVD folders, or disc image file (iso image) or burn to DVD.

Some else have to answer to Nero or Virtual Dub.

This sounds like the same steps I use for Nero... Hummm, I wonder why I'm getting that Invalid UDF File System error when trying to open the image in DVD Shrink. I also found out VirtualDub won't open Mpegs, so that's out.

you need to 'author' it into a dvd file structire before you can open with dvdshrink.. nero can do this but you need to 'burn' it using the "DVD-Video" type...[not data] to do with Nero, use Nero-Vision to reate a new 'dvd-video' disc and add the mpeg to it...
it will create the video_ts folder structure that dvdshrink neeeds...
alternately you can use ffmpeg or mencoder to shrink it...
sample line to use ffmpeg :
Code:
ffmpeg.exe  -i "input file.mpg" -target ntsc-dvd -g 15 -qscale 4 -bf 2  -lumi_mask 0.3 -scplx_mask 0.5 -acodec mp2 -ab 128 -y -aspect 4:3  -me x1   -vcodec mpeg2video -b 200 -f dvd  -ildct  "outputfile.mpg"

just change the 'inputfile.mpg' and 'outputfile.mpg' to your file names and run it Smile

note: you still have to 'author' it after to make a dvd-video disc...
[creates the video-ts and audio-ts dirs,etc.]

Thanks for the help. After tinkering around with Nero for a little while, I figured it out. I found a feature that would Author the DVD to The HD itself. At 1st I tryed to do an ISO but Nero won't let you do that in DVD Auther Mode, it will only let you save as a nero image which does me no good if I need to open it in DVD Shrink. With it authoring it to the drive it creates Vob files which will open in DVD Shrink. Again thanks for the help guys......
