Hey, I tried searching the forums and the wiki, and experimenting around, but I cannot seem to to get the client set up on another machine. I have set it up 'streaming', with the paramaters of pvr for the server (as that is the server's name), and \\pvr\gbpvr as the database share (and \\pvr\gbpvr is shared from the server, and points straight to the dir with the gbpvr.db3).

When I load gb on the client, it shows up, and the 'recording soon/recording next' screen appears, cycling through recording and pending shows. However when I click 'TV Guide', the machine's hard drive goes nuts, and GB freezes to the point where I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL and end gb. I tried waiting even hours (in case the guide was just slow to load), with no luck.

When I choose 'Live TV', I get the error: 'Failed to communicate with the Recording Service.'

I'm guessing I've set something up wrong... Can anyone assist me? And is there an official step-by-step guide to setting up the client?

Thanks

Brodie

EDIT: BTW both machines are using the newly released version as of yesterday.

If you can zip and attach the client and server logs, then I'll take a look.

To me it looks like a firewall getting in the way.

Quote:When I choose 'Live TV', I get the error: 'Failed to communicate with the Recording Service.'
This could only be: 1) server name entered wrong on client, 2) recording service not running on server, 3) firewall stopping client from communicating with server. I'm guessing 3.

There is no sign of any connections to the server (other than the database, but would expect that to work).

Ah! Probably firewall. What port(s) do I need to open?

Ok, getting closer I think. Now I just get "Error: Failure playing back file". Any thoughts?
EDIT: Got that figured out (had messed around with some of the older instructions on how to do a pc client from the wiki). It now 'starts' livetv mode, but there is no video (and possibly no sound, I don't have it hooked up as I'm configuring it in a room without spare speakers)....

EDIT: That was a codec issue, which I resolved by downloading that gplmpgdec decoder. Works pretty smooth now! The only thing I can't get to come up is the guide, but I think this has been mentioned before...

Ok, thats good progress.

What happens when you try to view the guide? Zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

I actually got that to work too. I hit 'TV Guide', and left it for an hour or two, and it finally came up. So I'm not sure why it takes that long, but it does work. Maybe in the future, there would be a way to have the server take the EPG, extract it to an xml file, then send it to the client (or have the client read it from gbpvr directory)? I'm guessing that would make it faster...

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I use the EPG Broadcast option to populate the EPG?

I've not seen any other reports of slow downs doing this, so I can only guess something abnormal is happening. Zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.
