I've seen a lot of discussion on the boards regarding watching HD content on the MVP. Basically you can't do it without transcoding. What I would like to do is to record the signal in SD but in 16x9 format. That way I could get the full screen on my 16x9 TV and play it over the MVP. Is this possible? I've been looking at the HVR-1600.

Sorry, this isnt possible.

You can set your PC to transcode your recordings to some other format (including SD MPEG2) after the recording has completed, but there is no want to tell a digital capture device to record a high definition show as standard definition.

How do you do this?? I have looked under "Transcode" in the video menu but don't get the option to transcode to MPEG2?

There is no default 'MPEG-2 to MPEG-2' setting so you'd have add a transcode profile to the config.xml's <CustomFFmpegConversions> section.

Instead of using one of the MPEG PS muxes like Cyberlink, I found that by choosing TS Mux for recording HD files will be transcoded on the fly to SD for the MVP by ffmpeg. I did have to change the setting in config.xml for <MVPFFmpegTranscodeTS> by replacing the entire line with the NTSC ffmpeg transcode line.

I have had real problems with this method for live tv on the mvp though even for SD content. I can't get the pre-buffering to stop GVPVR from sending an end of file.
