mapping mce star and hash

just got an mce remote and got it set up with hip (thanks to a great step-by-step on the wiki) but what keystrokes do i map star * and hash # to to get the phone type letter entering for pqrs and wxyz?

pqrs is 7 and wxyz is 9...
they are the keys 'above'' the letters,not below it

* should map to * and # to #

lol (at myself). I'd googled everything, been through umpteen linux forums, tried alt, alt shift, ctrl alt shift, on every key.

that's got to be my biggest 'doh' to date...
