I hacked it to get all of my data off by using 2 aligator clips, sewing needles and a length of hookup wire.

Put a needle where the pin should be, aligator clips joined together with wire then a pin through the ribbon cable at the appropriate location.
Would only work in Master with no slave attached, but my ugly solution got the data off the drive. Smile

I like your style, man. That's just the sort of thing I might end up doing. Not sure I understand, though; the ribbon connector would cover the spot where you are recommending a needle. How did you overcome that?

There are some better backup tools - it will create bootable device (CD,DVD,USB stick), just boot and create full partition backup to another partition, USB, network, etc. I am using it too. Floppy? No way... Smile

SAF6 (Standalone Filters)
HOBRing - My easy Amiga emulation

Any suggestions for better tools? Not that it does me any good today; I really need to do my best with this non-ASR windows backup. Yes, I was very surprised by the arcane need for a floppy disk.

I guess I've missed the fun of the forced reinstalled. I never meant to imply that SAF would solve your problems. I managed all my codecs and merits myself for years before trying it and fair play to you for giving it a go and discovering a clash that cant be fixed. All I (and others) were trying to point out was that the theory that installing something, going "oh crap" and uninstalling it again doesn't leave your system in the same state it was in before you started. The more you install/remove the bigger mess you get in... Anyway I guess it's all irrelevant now!

Trying to remember how I did this.
Oh yeah - I put you wrong on the pin - it actually went in on the bottom of the drive, through the correct metal edged holes in the pcb,

then aligator clip / wire / pin into the ribbon cable.

It's not quite the easiest thing to do, or what might be called best practise, but sometimes you have to get the data back!

Just playhing with a drive, and I think a much easier method is to use a twisty tie with a metal core. The metal in the one I had laying around here is a tight fit for the PCB holes, and it's flexible to so you can bedn it round to the ribbon cable, and solder a pin on the end. (I seem to remember also, that I chopped out a section of the wire I wanted to attach to, so it was easier to make a connection)

Yeah. More than ever. I think I've cooked the mobo, now. I sure wish I'd just lived with occasional video hangs.

How did you do that? no signs of life on the board?

I had mashed out the switch on my power supply from overuse, and had to replace it. Once I did, there was no life from the system. False alarm, though; it was because I had a SATA drive plugged into the wrong channel (didn't know that was possible).
