How well does GBPVR's conversion work?

Pardon the stupidity but what is Media MVP?

Media MVP should be renamed "Wife selling point"

It allows you to have the noisy, multi-fan PC case, with screaming arrays of striped hard discs in big ugly box to live in a far away place other than the living room. The MVP then connects via ethernet (or wireless) and since it's a small, paperback book sized, silent device, then connects to the TV.

I had absolutely no trouble getting budgetary approval for a second one for the bedroom TV.

It's this support for the MVP that was the easy swing from any of the other similar software offerings.

FWIW, I haven't had any problems playing back divx encoded files and for a little trick, what you can do is to start playback then pause. gbpvr will continue to create a temporary file beginning MVP.... which will be MPEG2. when this has finished, just rename it and you have an MPEG2 version which you can keep for later if you want to. Don't wait too long though otherwise it will get automatically deleted although I have had some stick around for a long time.

Just keep in mind that the Media MVP doesn't play xvid natively and you will find the playback to be substantially more troublesome on the MVP using that format. At least that's been the experience of most of us, ymmv.

Oh, well I don't have Media MVp so It won't matter to me, but thanks for the words of caution.

So how do they record these shows? DVD recorder and then to xvid?

They typically record a HDTV version of the show, remove the commercials and compress using a variety of tools to maximize quality. The closest I've come to automating this is posted here:

I put in Xvidcore.dll, it converted, but I could only get sound in GBPVR (Worked in DivX player), and the picture quality was lower than I expected.

You'll have to change the bitrate and tweak some other changes to find the 'sweet spot' that is acceptable to you and your standards.

Yea, as others have stated, this won't be an automated solution until you play around with it. A large component of video conversion involves ones perception of quality. What looks fantastic to some may look crappy to others. You just have to educate yourself and play around with it.
