The cyberlink decoders can do 5.1 off of an AVI file, I encode DivX files with 5.1 sound and they all work properly on my receiver.

on second thought.. you should grab a copy of ffdshow; i'm pretty sure their audio decoders give you 5.1 output capability.. while youre at it, just use ffdshow for xvid/divx playback, they work wonderful and you cant beat the postprocessing.

all my recordings get transcoded to interlaced xvid, and ffdshow deinterlaces it on playback.. smooth as silk, looks *better* than the mpeg2 file ever did with any decoder.

I finally got 5.1 sound working using PureVideo and ffdshow. Thanks to all that helped me out. Here's what I did for future readers...

1. Config as follows:
GBPVR config
==========
Playback tab
------------
- Video Decoder: NVIDIA Video Decoder
- Audio Decoder: NVIDIA Audio Decoder
- Audio Renderer: DirectSound: Realtek AC97 Audio (yours may be different)

DVD & Remote tab
-----------------
- Video Decoder: NVIDIA Video Decoder
- Audio Decoder: NVIDIA Audio Decoder
- Audio Renderer: DirectSound: Realtek AC97 Audio (yours may be different)

2. Exit GBPVR config, and start GBPVR in windowed mode to make things easier (you can change this in GBPVR Config | General | Show in windowed mode).

3. Once the movie starts playing, you should get the PureVideo icon in the taskbar. Bring up the properties and choose the Audio tab. Click on Speaker Setup and config as appropriate for your setup. For me, I chose "a receiver" and "via an SPDIF cable".

4. Click on OK. You should now be using PureVideo for LiveTV and DVDs. Verified when you see the PureVideo icon in the taskbar.

Now if you want to get 5.1 sound working for .avi files, follow KingArgyle's post at http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...hlight=5.1

You'll need ffdshow.

Please let me know if I missed anything else or if there's a better way to get 5.1.

Thanks!

sgilani, i downloaded installed the latest version of ffdshow and have a question since i still new to video/audio decoders and such.

from what i understand, ffdshow is just a decoder like purevideo. why don't i see it in GBPVR config as an Video Decoder option? I see the ffdshow icons running in the taskbar for avi files even though i didn't check the "Use ffdshow for postprocessing if installed" in GBPVR config.

i'm a bit confused on when and how ffdshow is used in GBPVR. could you or some enlighten person explain? thanks.

capone,

when following kingargle's instruction to get 5.1 on avi files, my mp3 are also affected. that is, mp3's are coming through the center channel. i did disable mp3 in ffdshow audio config under Codec.

did you have the same problem?

ffdshow is much more than just a decoder.. yes, it can be a decoder for almost any type of video, but its most powerful part is the postprocessing and deinterlacing.

You can certainly use ffdshow for your MPEG2 decoder, to make it work you need to enable mpeg2 decoding from the ffdshow Video decoder configuration.. then, in GBPVR change your video decoder to "System Default" and check the "use ffdshow" checkbox.. be aware though, it's going to be very cpu-intensive, but it might just work out for ya.

The reason ffdshow gets used for your AVI files is because the GBPVR settings are only for mpeg2 files (live tv and your recordings).. Since your AVI files are xvid/divx, GBPVR doesn't actually pick the decoder, the system just uses the system default decoder.. and if you've enabled a certain codec in the ffdshow settings (which i assume you have for xvid, divx, etc), then the system will start using the ffdshow decoder instead of the native xvid or divx decoders.
