Hmm, thanks for having a crack at this sub, much appreciated.

Well, on the plus side it fixed the error messages in Event Viewer and looking at those, you have got it stopping and starting the service nicely (I think). The one in the system event (see attachment) at 7:00:47 was me manually trying to stop it to install the patch.

I manually copied/pasted this from the Application Event Viewer.

7:03:04 The GB-PVR Recording Service service was successfully sent a stop control.
7:06:05 The GB-PVR Recording Service service entered the stopped state.
7:06:05 The GB-PVR Recording Service service was successfully sent a start control.
7:06:05 The GB-PVR Recording Service service entered the running state.

On the not so good side, the config lock-up still occurs and it's cyclic. This is what happens:

1. With GBPVR running normally, I go into config and start it up.
2. I wait a few secs, click OK (normally with no changes for testing purposes, although this is irrelevant).
3. The small "Information" Window appears and then lock up with "Not Responding". The Config window follows suit.
4. I close these both with right click close, choose "End Now", an ugly stop.
5. I then go through 1 and 2 again and it works fine, GBPVR restarts in the tray, all happy.

However if I then do 1 and 2 again, I get behaviour 3 and 4. This is repeatable.

I completely re-installed GBPVR last night, deleted the devnz folder, and cleaned the registry. Same behaviour  . After it has gone through a good cycle, it works just fine.

It seems odd that there are now no errors in Admin, but still a lockup?
HTH with the diagnosis!

OK, I decided to go the whole hog and biff .NET1.1 and .NET2.0 and all the Hotfixes and start over, then re-install GBPVR.
  • I uninstalled .NET (both, had to repair 2.0 before it would uninstall it).
  • Then I used the dotNET clean-up tool (fixes all versions) referenced from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922377
  • which links you to http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2...02439.aspx
  • which links you to http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dot...p_tool.zip
  • I then did a deep reg scan using 4 Regcleaners: CrapCleaner, Easyclean, Eusing, MISPBO, rebooting each time.
  • I then re-installed .NET2.0 only after making sure I had Windows Installer 3.0 installed, by reinstalling that. I don't think I need .NET 1.1 at this time. Hotfixes were also installed.
  • I then reinstalled GBPVR 98.13 and all the patches, copied back my config and databases and ... same behaviour.
I'm going nuts. Is there some thing that stops services from stopping .. other services e.g. ? It has no dependices though ... ???

In services.msc it just says "stopping" for the GBPVRRecording Service, but it never stops "stopping". If I ctrl-alt-delete and end the process.. it then stops.

I'm guessing something in the web/aspx engine is creating a thread that is not marked as a 'background' thread, which will cause the app to wait at exit until all the non-background thread exits.

OK ... not sure what that all means but ... how do I start troubleshooting it? Is there some sort of tool to see which threads are hanging around?

When I get some time I'll look into it to see if there is anything I can do, but in the meantime, it'd be useful if you can give me a foolproof set of steps to reproduce the error.

I've been a bit snowed under recently, so I'm only half reading some of the current threads, and having to ignore some stuff, or defer to look at sometime later.

This is a bit like my post 11 above and I can't guarantee it will fail on your system (hence not a foolproof set of steps) but here goes. The config lock-up occurs as follows:

1. With GBPVRTray running the GBPVRRecording Service running in the tray normally, but GBPVR itself not started, I go into config and start it up.
2. I wait a few secs, click OK (with or without changes for testing purposes, although this is irrelevant).
3. The small "Information" Window appears and then locks up (goes white) with "Not Responding" in the blue bar at the top of the window. The Config window immediately follows suit i.e. "Not Responding" in the blue bar at the top of the window.
4. I close these both with right click close, choose "End Now", an ugly way to exit. Config.exe disappears from the Task manager, but GBPVR.exe, GBPVRTray.exe and GBPVRRecordingService.exe all remain in Task manager.
5. I then go through steps 1 and 2 again and it works fine, GBPVR restarts in the tray (I can see the GBPVRTrayicon and MVPTrayIcon server icon come up again), all happy. In services.msc, GBPVR has changed from "Stopping" to "Started".
6. However if I now do steps 1 and 2 a third time, I get behaviour 3 and 4 back again.

This is a repeatable cycle.

Note: If I look at the GBPVRRecordingService services at step 3 it says "Stopping", but never does. It's like some sort of "hook" won't let go.

Thanks for looking at it, I know you're really tight on time and I have one instance of one fault vs. multiple instances for others. GBPVR runs fine, only not if I restart it via config. I'm willing to have a crack at gathering info and troubleshooting it any way you need. I've also tried running it both as a local system and a user in services, no change.

Cheers,

k.

I was obviously expecting somthing different to this. I do these same steps 200 times a day, and have never seen the problem. There must be some specific settings required for cause this to happen? (otherwise everyone would have the same problem)

You don't say ? :o Actually after I'd written it I realised it was a long shot, because what I just wrote was useless as far as diagnosis concerned.

I guess I was just hoping for some diagnostic debug version of the config app that would magically pinpoint exactly why this occurs :p.

If anyone else has any ideas about debug messages (where I look, what to look for) so sub can address problems that more than just 1 person has, I'd be grateful! I wouldn't want to wish this on anyone else, but at the end of the day, it's just a mild PITA, because GBPVR works and I use that more often than I change settings in the the config.

Cheers,

k.

sub,

Clutching at straws here...

Armed with your tips on how to use Process Explorer (PE) to get handles, I got this info when looking at config.exe in PE which hangs every second opening as described above.

It says a few things about "Mutants". Could those mutants be the problem? Big Grin

I dont know - I've never heard of them. None of the names it lists are familiar to me. I'm guessing they're things used by decoders etc behind the scenes.
