I now use no-ip.org, it doesn't have a "renew" policySmile . And it has some very nice extra's. e.g extra adresses you can make to link to whatever url's etc. Works very nice. I use it to start up my system via my draytek router, etc etc.

You don't need to renew it, you need to update it. You can set your router or some other software to do that automatically.

Must have missed that.:confused:

Edit: Can't find it in my router.

I was wondering: Although I have a dynamic ip (officially) it hasn't changed in 18 months. Could it be that that's why my dyndns-account had to be updated manually, it never was updated by the router because there was no need.:confused:

I found the following in the dyndns-faq:

Quote:A Dynamic DNS hostname only needs to be updated when your IP address has changed. Any updates more frequently than this - from the same IP address - will be considered abusive by the update system and may result in your hostname becoming blocked. Any script which runs periodically should check to make sure that the IP has actually changed before making an update, or the host will become blocked. An exception to this is for users with mostly static IP addresses; you may update 24-35 days after your previous update with the same IP address to "touch" the record and prevent it from expiring. Users will receive an e-mail notification if a host has been unchanged for 30 days, hosts are deleted after 35 days without being updated unless you've purchased upgrade credit(s).

Seems that my previous thoughts were right.
I'm very happy with no-ip.Smile But I'm glad I found out what went wrong before.

UncleJohnsBand Wrote:Most routers now support updating to a dynamic dns service provider.

I use dyndns.org.

Go to that site and create a free account.
Then setup your router to to update your dydns.org account.*
Then on your router you need to port forward 7647 (and 7648 if you are using VLC Streaming) to your gbpvr host machine.
Then to access from outside your network you use:

http://yourDydns.org.name:7647/gvbpvr/guide.aspx

*If your router dose not support updating a dynamic IP service then you can use a client on the gbpvr server that will keep your dyndns.org account up to date. I used this one (small footprint).

I have this set up exactly as you describe it....however i simply get a "timeout" error when trying to get in. It's like gbpvr simply doesn't respond.....but it works fine from inside my network. I did notice you used guide.aspx, but on my network i've been using index.aspx.....does that matter? is there some setting in gbpvr or web admin that i need to change?

I don't think that matters.
Do you have a firewall enabled on your server?

no...i have a software firewall on a dedicated box hooked to my cable modem (which i have port 7647 and 7648 forwarded to my gbpvr machine). There is no firewall on my gbpvr box, and i have windows firewall turned off. I tried using my ip address to get in (to bypass any problems with dyndns) but that still did not work, which it should correct? ex: http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:7647/gbpvr/index.aspx this is exactly what i use to get in on my network except using the machine's internal ip in place of the external. is it possible that i cannot check this from inside my network? (which i haven't tried it from outside the house yet....might call a friend and give him the address)

p.s. On a side note, i was playing in the settings menu on the web admin, and now my web admin comes up with a white background and all text....instead of the pretty green background with colored buttons and stuff. The only setting i change was the VLC streaming bandwidth setting, i switched it from LAN to 128, but that should have nothing to do with the look of the guide and all, right? (i set it back and nothing changed)

do you see the gbpvr login screen when you try from outside network?

Dan L.

PS change from "blank" to something else from web config screen.

I'm still waiting on a friend to try this from outside my home network....there is no easy way for me to check this right this second...but as soon as he gets in, i'll update. oh..and i switched the theme back. Strange because i didn't even know that option was there, i never changed it the first time (maybe i git a button on the keyboard or something while scrolling down.)

had an idea come to me....thought i would try one of those anonymous browsing sites, where you punch in the url and it gets the page for you, basically simulating (i think) someone outside of my network requesting the page. This is what it gave me:

<html>
<head>
<title>Not Found</title>
<style>
body {font-family:"Verdana";font-weight:normal;font-size: 8pt;color:black;}
p {font-family:"Verdana";font-weight:normal;color:black;margin-top: -5px}
b {font-family:"Verdana";font-weight:bold;color:black;margin-top: -5px}
H1 { font-family:"Verdana";font-weight:normal;font-size:18pt;color:red }
H2 { font-family:"Verdana";font-weight:normal;font-size:14pt;color:maroon }
pre {font-family:"Lucida Console";font-size: 8pt}
.marker {font-weight: bold; color: black;text-decoration: none;}
.version {color: gray;}
.error {margin-bottom: 10px;}
.expandable { text-decoration:underline; font-weight:bold; color:navy; cursor:hand; }
</style>
</head>
<body bgcolor="white">

<span><H1>Server Error in '/gbpvr' Application.<hr width=100% size=1 color=silver></H1>

<h2> <i>HTTP Error 404 - Not Found.</i> </h2></span>

<hr width=100% size=1 color=silver>

<b>Version Information:</b>&nbsp;Cassini Web Server 1.0.2486.9815

</font>

</body>
</html>

:from the looks of it...it is at least getting access to gbpvr from the outside, but is this an error with gbpvr, or the proxy used by the anonymous browsing site: only way to tell, still waiting on a friend to check it.
