Have you tried a video decoder other than the Ulead Video decoder you're currently using? This is not a common video decoder, and may be the cause of the problem.

I recognize the "Ulead" name as one of the programs that gets installed when you install the Hauppauge PVR-150 kit. This is a DVD authoring package. How do I actually go about changing the video recorder? A lot of this isn't quite clear. Is there a default I should be looking for? Thanks again.

You can set the video decoder that is used on the 'playback' tab of the config app. I'm guessing you've got it set to 'system default', and Windows is picking the Ulead one. Try the other options you have available.

Ok, I just changed it to "InterVideo NonCSS Video Decoder" (the only other choice listed) and also selected the VMR9 customer renderer, and I'm getting the same object reference error message as before...

I dont know. Maybe your video card isnt directx9 compatible, or maybe you need to install DirectX9.

So when you used the regular VMR9 renderer, with the Intervideo decoder, did it fix your problem with the video being at the top of the screen? If not, attach a screenshot.

It might have(!) I'll have to hook it up to the TV to be sure.

Another odd little problem: If I watch live TV, the external channel changer works fine (uses the S-Video input, HIP and the Hauppauge IR blaster). If I use the guide to select a program and select "watch", it changes the channel just fine and I can watch the program. If however I select "record" to record it at its scheduled time, the recording starts...but the channel changer is not invoked (and the blaster doesn't blink).

Just had a thought about that last problem with the channel change not happening when recording: When I first started out with gbpvr a couple of weeks ago, I ended up creating a Windows user specifically for the recording service because it would not record to a network drive. Could it be that the Windows user I created is somehow unable to launch the Hipsend program to change the channels? Which log file could I look at to see if some kind of error is happening (I'd like to learn at the same time...). Thanks.

Yeah maybe, or possibly the program is run but cant perform its function for under this different user account (can find config or something).

You'd see an error in the GBPVRRecordingService.exe.log if it failed to start hipsend.exe. If there is no error, then its most likely starting but hipsend is failing. You'd have to look at the hipsend log (if there is one) to diagnose this.

I looked through some other threads and also saw other people reporting the same problem: hipsend works when watching live TV but not with the scheduler. There are suggestions about preventing the recording service from interacting with the desktop and I tried that, but with no better result. No one seems to have found a definite answer to the problem (the threads end unresolved). There is also a suggestion about using the MCE IR blaster channel changer...but I have regular Win XP, not the MCE edition. The recording service log show that hipsend is indeed invoked but nothing happens. Here is the long entry I see:

15/12/2006 8:28:00 PM.230 INFO [5] Found new programme requiring recording: Nova Vize
15/12/2006 8:28:00 PM.230 VERBOSE [5] Changing to channel (GBPVR.Backend.Common.ExeChannelChanger): 14
15/12/2006 8:28:00 PM.246 VERBOSE [5] Running: C:\Program Files\HIP\HipSend.exe 014
15/12/2006 8:28:00 PM.355 VERBOSE [5] Requesting IRecordingSource to start recording: C:\Gbpvr buffer\Nova Vize\Nova Vize_20061215_20302100.mpg
15/12/2006 8:28:00 PM.355 VERBOSE [5] DirectRecordingSource about to start recording oid:3 channel:14
15/12/2006 8:28:02 PM.356 VERBOSE [5] recording started
15/12/2006 8:28:02 PM.356 VERBOSE [5] Programme is now recording

Anyone with suggestions? Other then that, I'd be in business! Thanks.
