I hope you don't abandon XP, as I have no intentions of moving to Vista with my machine. I just don't have any compelling reason to move to Vista.
No worries there. I'll absolutely be supporting XP, but I'm sure you can understand its pretty important to get the app working smoothly on Vista these days - there will more and more Vista users every day.

Thanks Lindsey. I was able to get my MediaMVPs working when the NIC connection was forced to 10/half or 10/full-duplex. Both my MVPs were able to watch live TV or recorded programs simultaneously without incident.

I strongly suspect that the problem here has to do with the auto-negotiation with my gateway router. I believe that Windows XP was holding my network speeds at 10Mbps after auto-negotiation, although I cannot confirm this. The only reason I suspect this is because of this link.

http://www.tweakxp.com/article37130.aspx

Vista, on the other hand, seems to be allowing my network speed to sit at 100Mbps after auto-negotiation. Ironically, I believe my network is slower because of this, so I'm not too sure if either of my 2 routers on the path can truly handle this (Airlink AR315 and Linksys WRT54G). I also don't know the true capabilities of the MediaMVP boxes, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what on my network is having a problem with video at 100Mbps.

Like you said, I'm sure there are some better network techies out there that can digest this info.

Forcing my PC NIC to 10Mbs is an improvement except that it can't cope with TV or video! Shows obvious signs of too slow a connection. Glad that you have some sort of solution, though.

Vista certainly does something different with IP from XP. My 2Mbs broadband goes 1.8Mbs under XP but 2.5Mbs under Vista! Wonder if this has something to do with the problem with the MVP??

Actually, it looks like my XP connection was working at around 100, and not 10, so I'm back to the drawing board as far as what might be happening here.

I did a search over at shspvr.com and the problem we are experiencing is acknowledged by Hauppauge and they are "working on it". So when a modified dongle appears is anyone's guess. I am now in a quandary over my options re getting a working MVP back. Seems so stupid to have the complicated software, GBPVR, maintained by one (super) man, working, but a simple bit like the comms interface maintained by a large firm providing problems! It's even more puzzling when Martin's alternative dongle seems to communicate OK! There seems to be a common thread, here. If you want something done, give it to a one man band!!

On the topic of Vista and gbpvr this reader's comment on the blog I Cringely
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/
with regard to Digital Rights Management throws a flag. Does anyone know if this posters assertion is accurate?

and a little googling gets another flag
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=25124

ie, why bother getting Vista working if its going to create all these problems?!?

====copied reader comment====

DRM is the reason that I won't be buying any Vista PCs! (I own six, or eight XP PCs).
Vista DRM will "copy protect" all audio and video that it touches - and if it doesn't, Win Media will!
I have 40GB of digitized 8mm/Super 8 movies from our family collection. If I put them on a Vista machine, my understanding is that I CAN NEVER SEE MY FAMILY MEMORIES AGAIN, except on that PC!
That is a risk that I will never take, but what about the people who don't understand that consenting to the Vista EULA equals surrendering all of you personal property and historical family heirlooms, on your "personal" computer to a monopolist, most often referred to with $ in its name?

Based on the feedback here (switching my NIC to 10 MBS / Full Duplex) I seem to have resolved the stuttering problems I had experienced since I've upgraded to Vista.

I still notice some lag in moving around the menu, but no more or less when compared to my XP experiences.

I've played about 2 min of video at the moment. I was experiencing stutters every ~ 20 seconds or so. For the moment I'll call this a fix. If I experience more problems, I'll pass them along.

Interesting. 10Mbs/FD didn't work for me. It just hung up. I've tried all possible combinations and none worked! There is a known problem, though, and the mvpmc dongle does communicate properly. But good luck to you and thanks for chipping in.

Looks like Hauppauge has a new dongle up on their site that may work better with Vista.
