Just a suggestion here to check the CPU utilitization at the client when streaming over wireless and then compare it to the utilization when streaming wired.

I find it just as (or more) likely the client can't keep up not because of insufficient network bandwidth, but instead because the wireless adapter in the laptop is eating too much CPU. The wireless adapter may be using significantly more CPU than the wired adapter even though it's dealing with the same amount of network throughput.

If the CPU is pegged and thus can't keep up between the decoding requirements and the network adapter operation it might make sense to look for an updated driver for your wireless adapter. Alternatively, there may be some options available to speed up operation of the adapter (in the event the settings have defaulted to less-than-maximum performance for the purpose of the broadest possible compatibility).

At least determining how CPU utilization differs between the wireless and wired configurations should help isolate what the actual problem is. It sure seems like there should be enough raw wireless bandwidth with G for HD...

thx for the suggestions MarcInNH.

I should probably update where I am at with wireless streaming. I have setup separate wireless access point dedicated to just for the GBPVR client to connect to. This is a modified motorola wr850g with dd-wrt firmware instead of stock. This allowed me to up the tx power and optimize the transmission for video. I now do not have problems streaming recorded tv programs wirelessly, in fact it streams wireless just as reliable as a wired connection for me (note here...I am pretty isolated from other sources of 2.4 ghz interference, i.e. phones and other wireless g trafic). However, I still can not stream liveTV wirelessly. As I understand this is because I am trying to view ATSC and have only had luck using the dvr-ms mux. The dvr-ms mux does not stream...subs suspician is the there is some sort of drm (digital rights management) component to dvr-ms files that prevents it from streaming (note when I say streaming, i really mean the the client is setup for filesharing, since streaming does not work with dvr-ms files). I seems that what we/I need is a mux that creates mpg files well from atsc source. I have tried many mpg muxs, and have not had success (I have not heard of anyone else that has had much success either).

To summarize, my experience is that wireless g optimized (may take some work) has enough bandwidth to transmit hd files. I am assuming users viewing DVB material should be able to stream liveTV wirelessly, but users viewing ATSC material may not be able to until a non ms mux comes around.

Since you narrowed down the live tv issue to only being a problem on wireless connections, my gut feeling is the TCP window is the puny default setting. Try the TCP Optimizer program to increase the TCP window (search by name, you'll find it.... albeit along with a forum). Also, the MTU on your client needs to be the same or lower than your router. A MTU of 1500 is the default (it's like 1492 max... I'd have to look it up) but 1300 may produce less latency. I wouldn't go too small (less than 1200) or you may actual make the problem worse. The TCP window, however, you could crank up like a normal 100 mbit card.
This may not solve the problem, but at least you'll have better through-put (I typically see my download speeds go from 2.5mb to 3.5+ which is the cap on my modem, just by tweaking the TCP window).
